Modeling general discussion
Railroad Lettering Fonts
I would like to start decaling some of my data only cars sometime soon. I have not been able to find pictures of freight cars (the rr I want to model was bought out in about 1901) and I probably will want to revise it's history to show it still existing in either the 1920's or 1950's. So I will need to create my own lettering patterns - which has been fun. Microscale shows 2 predominant alpha/number fonts - "Railroad Roman" and "Gothic".
Increasing attendance to RPM's?
After attending this years Pacific Northwest RPM meet a few weekends ago, I left wondering what the modeling community in the Pacific Northwest can do to increase the participation of this event. I would guess that 50 people attended the day long event. A quick look at the PNW RPM facebook page shows a lite over 1000 followers. Even if a 1/4 showed up that would be 250 people.
For those that have attended one of the bigger RPM meets, what draws a large crowd? Is it the location, advertising, history of the event location, etc?

Model Train Clubs
Is there a protocol to visiting a club for the first time? I mean, I don't want to be rude... does one need an invite by a member? Is there anything a person should, or should not bring? If the club is also a museum, should a person just visit the museum a few times first? Is there maybe someplace with a sort of protocol guide to model train clubs?

Weekly Photo Fun (May 7ᵗʰ - May 13ᵗʰ)
Sunday seems like a good day to kick off the photo thread... I can't wait to see some amazing photos.
I don't think I need to remind anyone but as always we all love seeing the in progress photos just as much as your completed projects...
Classic Metal Works
Got an email notice today indicating that they are teaming up with a company called Round 2 Models to produce their vehicles just wondering if any one else got same notice.
Layout lighting choice
The 3rd ballast in 5 professionally installed dual tube fluorescent fixtures on my layout has just failed. There seem to be 4 choices for fixing this:
1. Replace the ballast and continue with the fluorescent lighting; (risks future ballast failures)
2. Replace the ballast and install compatible LED tubes; (risks future ballast failures)
3. Remove the ballast and install compatible LED tubes;

San Diego people
I'm relatively new, and am looking for San Diego people I can pick their brains about DCC with... I know there's a BIG club out here (well, three... four if you count the Oceanside area, which is a bit far for me) but I haven't really reached out to the HO club yet at Balboa Park, but, that's more because it's so big, and such a cool layout, I'm a bit intimidated...

Details west grade Xing?
was trying to find some close up pics and get any info I can about the Details West grade crossing signals. I got a pair of them and there are some tiny parts. Has anyone ever actually hooked these up and made them work? It's going to be a hard enough project putting them together let alone actually wiring them. Any info about them would be appreciated

Train sets, and a DCC question
So, I LOVE train sets, but, it's rare that I buy one... usually I'm doing like others here, and buying engines, and cars, and the like... so, I wanted a simple way to dive into DCC. I already have two DCC engines (a Bachmann Spectrum DCC On Board Southern 4-4-0, engine number 3863... the older Spectrum Southern 4-4-0 that has the chains on the tender trucks... it is my favorite still, with it's BEAUTIFUL wood load... the other DCC engine I have, is the Bachmann Spectrum Southern #722 "Connie", that was DCC ready...
Replacing open-frame motor brushes on an On3 Shay
This week I'm fixing an On3 Shay for my friend. We used to run it on his layout and then one day it stopped. Looking into it, it looks like the open-frame motor brushes are totally worn out, so now I'm trying to find replacement brushes. My googling attempts at locating replacement parts have failed so I'm turning to any insight I can find here :-)
