Modeling general discussion

What is YOUR particular brand of enjoyment in Model Railroading ?
Here on the forums of late we have experienced the doom and gloom portent of model railroading future, the failure of the 4' X 8' layouts but also things like the realism thread and the Depression Era thread.
These topics got me to thinking: What is YOUR particular passion, YOUR points of interests that became focal points for the enjoyment of the Model Railroading Hobby ? What is the motivating factor(s) that keep you plugging away.

flat paint and decals
how well will it work using water slide decals on flat paint. should I spray the flat with gloss apply decals then spray dull cote?

Nice to see the smaller layout topics,
Especially as seen in the two "One Town Layout" posts. Totally realistic to achieve.
Did anyone get a load of the feature model railroads in the February 2018 issue of MR? One is 32' X 35'! The other is 42' X 57' double deck no less! Good Grief!!
Their project pike is really down-to-earth, 2'9" X 8'2". Now this is something a mere mortal could accomplish.

Green Coal and Tank Cars into Coal Mines
A friend gifted me a copy of Burlington Bulletin number 35, The Q in the Coal Fields. It covers the CB&Q operations in Southern Illinois where I live and I model the IC in Centralia, IL in 1955. The Q had a large operation in Centralia in that era wit a large yard, a passenger and freight depot and they employed 400 people in Centralia. So this book is very relevant to my layout. Old Ben Coal Company operated several mines in the area. In the 1950s they marketed coal for retail sale as Old Ben Green Coal.
Badger Airbushes Sale
I don't know if this is allowed(mods delete if necessary).
I saw this morning on the Badger Airbush Facebook page that they are having a huge deal today only. $54 for any airbrush!
I'm in no way affiliated with Badger, but simply trying to pass along this limited offer.

Quality Tools Matter
I'm helping a friend build a layout. He has little to no electrical experience or knowledge so I am helping especially with wiring. We ran a 14 gauge solid wire buss and we are using 20 gauge feeders. In soldering the wires together I brought my soldering station to his house. Well, that is a bit of a hassle and so I asked him to buy a soldering iron we could use at his place. Nothing fancy I said just a simple plug in 40 watt iron. Well he is frugal and when Canadian Tire had a sale on he bought a $15 25 watt iron. What a piece of junk. This iron normally retails for $20.

Weekly Photo Fun 1/2 - 1/6/2018
Time for some more photo fun. I've made the week a bit short in order to end by Saturday (like it used to do).
Show 'em if you got 'em.

Ward Kimball's Grizzly Flats Railroad
Years ago when they would run the steam engines at Ward Kimball's home (of Disney fame), a friend of mine would call me and give me the heads up. I would run over there and spend a few hours riding back and forth on the short track next to his house.
A few times there would be celebrities that you would not recognize with out their makeup. But I did sit next to Sally Fields and Susan Sarandon one time.
What is realism? Does it matter?
This has come up implicitly many times over the years. I am curious though, how do you define "realism" and how important is it to you in your modeling and layout building?
