Modeling general discussion
NMRA?
Recently, the NMRA division that I used to belong to went defunct. The reasons for this were probably as varied as the scales in model railroading. I felt that the division was too large in area to effectively serve those model railroaders who live there. North to South was somewhat in the 95-100 mile range border to border.
Modern Turnouts (new design) - And we just got used to concrete ties. . .
I was walking by the UP mainline this evening (double track) and I noticed some new changes to the frog and the points of the cross over turnouts. The points have two ties bars; one at the begining and one in the middle. There is also some linkage on the side of the turnout to connect the two tie bars. The guard rails are metal bars and not made from actual rail anymore. The frog is the most interesting part; the center of the frog pivots with the wheel flange depending on the direction of the car traveling over the frog.
Helpers on flat and level ground. . .
I have been doing business in Central California and have done a lot of driving up and down the 99. Central California is much like the mid west - lots of corn fields and FLAT, FLAT, FLAT.
One thing I have noticed along the UP mainline, which parallels route 99, are freights running "helpers" on the end of the train. At first, I thought it was just some sort of locomotive transfer but it was happening both ways. For example, 4 engines up front and 2 at the rear of the train on trains heading north and south.

We are seeking fellow model railroaders in the Miami area ...
We are looking for fellow model railroaders to be part of our Miniature Railroad Club here in Miami since there is currently none available. If there is enough interest out there, I will provide some exciting details. Please let us know what scale you model? What are your specialties (scenery, maintaining engines & rolling stock, track, wiring, etc.)
MTH DCC Couplers and other new technologies. . .
I have to confess, I was on the MR website the other day . They posted a video of a MTH SD70M (I think) with DCC couplers. Now that is WAY COOL!!!!! I think that will be a real aid in operations. The couplers did not look very prototypical but it was still COOL!
It will be interesting to see what technology brings to the hobby in the next few years.
Shopping around
Well I recently had a great shopping experience with Scenic Express whom I hope to see supporting MRH in the near future.
This time around I am ordering up some good deals from Micro-Mark, one of the many fine companies already supporting MRH. So far the Micro-Mark experience has been good. Ordering off the website was a breeze. Confirmation of the order was quick, I was notified by email when my order began being processed and picked for shipping and I received an email letting me know it had shipped. Great stuff as I like to be kept in the loop!
? about a Santa Fe flat car I saw 1978
I worked for Sea Land from @1978 to1981. I went to work for them before the first double stack cars were built, and left to work for another terminal a couple of years after the double stacks had pretty much replaced 89 foot flats in intermodal service for shippoing containers. In about 1978 or 1979 I was stopped at a grade crossing at Rosecrans Ave in La Mirada, Ca for a Santa Fe freight train that was carrying the Sea Land land bridge from Hobart to Houston. The trsain was "flying" through at speed when I suddenly noticed a single depresse3d center flat car wit
Photography Guru's Gather Round Please...
Mrs. Blue found this for me and it looks like it might be just what I, (and others) might need to improve our photography of the subjects we want to show off or write articles about!
I'd like some opinions from those, "in the know".
So what do you think? Is this a good starting point for a guy with no lighting or backdrops and little budget?
