Modeling general discussion

Modeller's block

I am experiencing what I'll call Modeller's Block. I have the space and the means to start a layout. I also have several projects on the go. Hoping that writing this will bring some clarity of mind.

One project has me stumped as I can't figure out how to achieve something I need to model. I do have an idea but that means obtaining some material that will be difficult to get where I am. So that project languishes on the workbench.

Creative use of Legos

I was inspired by Tom Klimoski’s use of Lego parts for his operating overhead rolling door and was wondering if other modelers have used Legos in creative ways on their layouts. I don’t mean using Legos for scenic elements but rather for mechanisms, etc., similar to what Tom did. I know of some modelers who glue Lego bricks to square and reinforce corners on structures which is a great idea.

Pointe St. Charles caboose question

I have been researching for the past week trying to find out when these air intakes first appeared on these CN steel cabooses. Seen under the numbering in this photo:

So far the earliest dated photo I could find is 1978.

Does anyone know of any CN cabooses that had these prior to 1978?

interchange and staging

I am in the midst of track planning a layout based on des Moines Iowa. At one time 10 railroads interchanged through a central yard located just off of downtown, Iowa Transfer. My main focus is the Des Moines Union, a 4 mile long railway owned by Wabash and Milwaukee Road jointly, but operated as a Class 1. DMU also interchanged with the various RR's while plying its varied line. I have a 12x12 'U' shaped area that will run around the walls.

Lionel reenters the HO market

Lionel is advertising a new train set. They are reproducing the Polar Express in HO as they have already done in O and S. While it looks like train set stuff with a lot of cast on detail, it is actually quite advanced with control in DC, DCC and their proprietary control which is also compatible with Blue Tooth and can be operated with an app in both Android and iPhone.

Decoder install in N Scale Kato RDC

I have recently successfully installed decoders in my two new N scale RDC's.  I chose to document this in my blog thread.  For anyone not following my blog, here is the link to the step by step process I went through.

Your opinion please - "How to" PDFs from condensed postings on MRH

I was thinking (yes, it was painful!) and was wondering if you all would find it helpful to have a condensed version of some of the postings on this site on "How-tos".  As an example, if you followed along with Michael Rose on his blog on the progress and you wanted to find how he did a certain structure, scenery area, etc. you might have to look through many pages on his thread that was populated with many comments to distil down the "essence" of the subject.
