MRH Magazine general discussion

Calling all modelers! Especially modelers close to Portland, OR!

MRH has a new sponsoring advertiser coming on line: New York Railway Supply - and we're looking for a modeler who would like to get one of their super-neato turntable indexers (a $375 value) for free!

We need someone who has a turntable scene where we could install one of these little gems and then video it in action. The video footage will be part of their ad in issue 2.

Feedback On First Issue

Joe,

Just wanted to say how much I liked and enjoyed the first issue.  I learned a lot and really like the whole idea.

I just found it yesterday and downloaded the Lite version.  I have a good DSL connection and the rich text content was flawless (using Adobe Reader 8).  There were no problems with download, installation or use.

Which one is more popular? Football of Model Railroading?

I came into this site this afternoon on;y to discover that there are very few postings to look at. AS I was wondering why that was, I was reminded by my sons that it is Superbowl Sunday and I immediately understood why that was. Obviously football is  more important than this hobby.

Updating pages on this site

Just ignore all the "new" indicators in the Recent posts listing - that's us updating the pages to conform to the slightly different styles we're using here on the new site.

Once the dust settles and all these changes for the new site blow over, you won't be seeing masses of these pages listed in the recent posts any longer.

MRH web site final move WAS MONDAY NIGHT, Jan 26 at midnight, Pacific time

The final move of the MRH Site to it's new much larger server home will be conducted tonight at midnight Pacific Time.

The site will go into offline maintenance mode for up to an hour, then come back. It will take 2-3 days for all the DNS settings to propagate across the internet, so for a while you may appear to be on the old site.

You will be able to tell you're on the old site because it will be set to read only - you will be able to read the site, but you will not be able to make any posts.

MRH Web site outage from 4:10 pm - 5:35 pm Pacific Time

We had a web site outage today from 4:10 pm to 5:35 pm Pacific Time.

Our hosting provider was upgrading some software and had a problem - it took just over an hour to recover everything.

But we're back up now!

Sorry for the outage, but sometimes those things happen. Fortunately they've been pretty rare with us until our recent growing pains to try and keep up with the server load.

We're getting there - and we appreciate your patience as we work to meet the demand effectively.

PDFs in Linux...

I happily downloaded the premium version of this magazine, only to learn that the most advanced PDF reader in Linux still isn't equal to Adobe 9, which we dont' have for Linux yet. A lot of content doesn't show up in it. So I guess my question is, how long until the Lite version is out?

Its so great that your doing this! :) Hurrah! I am a big supporter of open source and creative commons content!

Modeling The Texas Panhandle

I'm planning on modeling the former Denison-Wichita Falls Line of the Katy.

I've only been up that way twice so I really was unable to get a good idea.

Besides prickly pear, how would you model the grass up there?

Site Download Mirrors

At this point the first issue has been a phenomonal success beyond the anticipation of the editors.  they blew through the roof of the first server provider in a little under six hours and it appears they will blow through the roof of the second server provider in a matter of weeks.

So the question is, is that anyway the magazine could be delivered to keep MRH from having to move to a very expensive ISP?
