New mini-features debuting in MRH Issue 4

We're debuting a couple of new mini-features in Issue 4 (due out the first week of October) ...

One evening project

A short 1-1/2 page project to improve your railroad in a single evening. Not only will this be something quick you can do to upgrade your layout, it's an easy, short format for an article to submit. Ideal if you'd like to write something for MRH but don't have the time or skill to do a mega-article.

2010 Narrow Gauge convention in St Louis - Help Wanted

MRH is making plans to attend the 2010 National Narrow Gauge Convention and we're looking for a local volunteer who is responsible and would want to temporarily become "MRH Staff" for the vendor show.

We will pay for your convention registration and give you an official MRH T-shirt. In return you agree to help us staff our booth and to run local errands for us as needed. We want someone who lives in the area so we can rely on your local knowledge if we need any last minute runs for supplies, computer repairs and the like.

2009 Narrow Gauge convention in Colorado and MRH

MRH does NOT have a booth at the National Narrow Gauge convention in Colorado this year - we just don't have the resources yet to attend every large convention.

However, we will have flyers and free CDs available, so that's a start.

Those of you who are subscribers or loyal readers, remember to use this opportunity to spread the word about MRH!

Hat's off to Athearn

When the Athearn Challengers first came out a few years ago, I managed to get a couple of them as soon as they were available. Yeah I know the headlights and number boards look more like illuminated pumpkins than officially approved appliances and the sound while not lacking in volume does lack accuracy. That being said, these are the best running steam engines I have ever owned.

Our call for articles ... and saying NO sometimes

Yes, MRH needs you to submit articles ... however.

We've gotten quite a few articles in some categories - and nothing in many other categories. For example, we're starting to get a pile of layout and layout construction articles. But we've gotten almost no loco, rolling stock, or structure construction articles.

A few of the folks who have submitted layout articles to us have gotten rather put out with us when we told them NO on their article submissions.

The response we've gotten back in a few cases when we've said no to some submitters is:

Printer friendly version of MRH

I've had some discussion at shows recently with modelers who download our magazine and then prefer to print the pages out to read them.

We designed MRH to be easy on the eyes when reading it on a computer screen, but we never really designed it to be printed from front-to-back.

Paper Model RR Magazines Vs MRH

Has anybody noticed that one or more of the Paper magazine's seem to be trying to out due MRH with new on line content, improved video's and more free stuff offered? I could be wrong but it seems that MRH has hit a spot in the sides of these model RR Magazines and they are trying to up grade their add content. Their articles seem to be getting longer with more detail and it appears they are trying to get people to get into their forums with more vigor than ever before.

I had this odd dream and I must share it. . .

I had this really odd dream the other night. . .

I was trying to convince Joe Fugate that he needed to advertise the Model Railroad Hobbyist website on the Model Railroad Hobbyist website so that it would get more exposure.  I don't know what it means but I just thougth I would share.

MRH YouTube Channel

I was just over at the MRH YouTube Channel...

The MRH Mailbox Promo Video  is a classic!  Two thumbs up Charlie!  I got a good laugh out of it.

Increased Issues and Reduced Movie Time

Or otherwise,

The Review of Expected Results and the Lessons of the Experimental Results

I think it will be interesting to see how the original premise of MRH pans out in terms of the expected results versus the experimental results.  One way we can gauge this is through the amount of discussion generated by each article.

On one hand it baffles some of us how so little discussion occurs over a really deep design orientated article provided by a professional model railroad designer.
