Herniated Dodecagon Helix - Putting It All Together

My previous blog entry described the basic geometry of my recently completed helix, and the process I used to construct the roadbed. That blog ended with a collection of disassembled half-circles of the helix, ready to begin final assembly. This entry will discuss the process I used to actually put that all together.

Building a Christmas Layout/Module/Diorama

What could be more fun to work on during the Thanksgiving Holiday than a Christmas scene, complete with railroad station, church, Christmas tree salesman and a little town, complete with gazebo and town Christmas tree? For a taste of what I mean, check out my last post. That was the former layout that had to be scrapped. But I'm salvaging all that stuff for this new module.

Layout for Review

Hi, here is a layout that I am currently designing. It will be a small HO switching layout (approx. 8'x8' with a 6' yard.

I would appreciate any comments, (positive or negative) or changes to the layout. The track is Peco code 83 and the switches are Peco #5s. The width of each module is 18".

Weathering: Capillary action

My favorite part of the hobby is weathering. I've definitely learned some reliable techniques that work well for me. I've attached some pics for your viewing interest :)

One skill I have yet to become consistent on is getting capillary action to work. I do the usual dullcote application before starting any weathering. From there I prefer to use acrylics and powders. I have used oils in the past; the results can be good...drying time, too long.

I welcome any insight, tips, technique suggestions.

Lighting on the BNML - The last of it...

In my original Lighting Thread, Work continues on the BNML - Lighting, I declared "The valance is done!" on January 16th 2016. (Almost a full year ago!)

Apparently this was a falsehood, an untruth.     ...ok...     I lied.

I had forgotten ignored the fact that I still needed to do the lighting in my office area. Now that I am ready to begin scenery in this area, I really have to finish it first.

My scratch built work

Hey guys, a new scratch built project is complete. I made the school using Monster Modelworks materials and Evergreen styrene. After the walls were cut to the proper dimensions (and cut out the window openings of course), I fixed bracing strips to the backside of the walls and primed all the walls with a gray primer. I then painted it using a sponge, left it to get dry. I used pigment (Vallejo Green Earth) for the mortar. Brushed it to the surface and sealed it with a flat spray. The structure is slightly weathered. That's it. Enjoy and cheers!

January 2017 issue cover sneak peek

Actor Michael Gross (who Ken Patterson interviewed in his Nov 2016 issue What's Neat column), is also the cover story of the Jan 2017 issue. He does a detailed step-by-step of his rolling stock weathering methods. From the cover photo you can see that Michael's a very capable prototype modeler.
