Photos of Bob Gretillat’s Rock Island layout

A while back I had the pleasure of attending an operating session at Bob Gretillat’s Rock Island layout. I like to shoot video to show the trains in operation, but on this particular occasion the video didn’t turn out very good, but Bob’s model scenes are well worth showing. So, I thought I would share a few images from our time.

I hope you enjoy this short tour. Images on the first post.

Working on the Railroad....Again!!! Further progress on the 12 spot

Well, it's been a while since I've posted an update on the goings on at the MSR&N, so here goes; I've been devoting much of my modeling time on various projects while working on the studio/train room. I've worked on a lot of rolling stock and other art projects in the studio but mostly I've been finishing the Mogul project.

Best techniques for applying decals?

We've just received some questions about applying decals and it occurred to me we've never discussed that much either in an MRH article or video.

So, two things: First, what do you recommend as the best method(s) for applying decals, and second, anyone willing to do an article or video?

Virginian & Appalachian Railroad Paint Schemes

Hello everyone

Awhile back I shared paint schemes for my freelanced Virginian & Appalachian (V&A) railroad. However, I didn't feel satisfied with those paint schemes so I recently went back and changed them. These represent the paint schemes from as-delivered until present day (early 70s)

BeNscale Signals

Just wondering if anyone has ordered  target signals from BeNscale (benscale.com).

I placed (and paid via PayPal) an order back in October 2016.I have not heard anything from this place and they do not respond to my emails asking for a shipping date.  I placed an order earlier last year and I think it took around 2 to 3 months before I received it (after issuing a complaint through PayPal).

RR-Cirkits MotorMan Update

To All,

Any help will be greatly appreciated.  Have installed RR-Cirkits Motorman to my layout with the intent of driving turnouts.  Upon connecting the Motorman to the Loconet/SSB network, I get 3 JMRI error messages that suggest a firmware update is necessary.  I downloaded the update and a set of instructions to perform the update from the RR-Cirkits page.

West Haven Industrial Rwy. : Handlaid Turnouts

I've settled on Peco Code 83 flex for my track and hand laid turnouts using PC board ties and constructing over a template. I've made a few in code 100 successfully. I have no Code 83 rail on hand and am assuming I can simply strip the rail from the Peco Code 83 flex to hand lay the turnouts.

Anyone see any reason why that wouldn't work? Do I need to buy Code 83 rail separately?

Sound in an Atlas/Roco S2

I want to install sound and DCC in an old Atlas/Roco S2. I have read Mr.DCC's page on that topic and see he used a Micro Tsunami and apparently removed the weight.

That was a few years ago and I am wondering about a Loksound Micro Select decoder. I think it might work with a nice sugar cube speaker.

Any additional thoughts or suggestions?

Faller Expert vs. Super Expert glue

I have two Faller glues, Expert and SUPER Expert, and use them both, and both work very well. HOWEVER, I use them randomly, without real thought of which is which. I searched the Faller website, and Googled both glue names and vs. searches, and have yet to find out the difference between the two. I have found a few posts that Super Expert dries faster, but no confirmation of that, nor can I confirm that.
