3D print of the Illinois Terminal Depot Monticello Illinois

This is how I created a model of the Illinois Terminal Depot in Monticello, Illinois.

Drive Around the Mill

The Track Dept. informed us that the main interlocking will be out of service for the rest of the morning at least...  Perhaps it would be a good time to take the yard vehicle and give the new conductor trainee a tour of the mill.

  We'll start with the woodlot.

DCC Wireless Controllers

Our American Modular Group in Dunedin, New Zealand has an American HO layout called Route 66.

It is modular/sectional comprising of four corner units with a single 1200 mm [47.24395 inch] bridge section between making it 3.5 metres [11.5 feet] wide.

There are five [5] straight units at 1200 mm comprising of each side, making the layout a total length of 9 metres [29.5 feet] long.

A moving experience -- contemplating putting it back together

The two major pieces of the BQR are now sitting in the rec room in our new location. I have been contemplating how I want to rebuild and change it. In the old location it was tucked into a tight 7'x10' corner. So of necessity it had an 'L' shape. The new space is 20' long but limited in width. So the old landscaped helix goes at one end and the yard at the other. And something new in between. The landscaping survived quite well -- I had packed up all the trees, structures and figures -- they are still at the off-site.

Automation of staging, what strategy & how is it implemented?

A part of my layout design & initial build is what if any automation strategy should be employed and with that what elements are needed.  The overall aspects will likely evolve with the layout.  However, the first sections that will be built are the staging area.  These will be permanently installed from nearly day one.  So the automation strategy for that section is really needed now.

BLI "Stealth Series" DCC Conversion

More than 10 years ago I purchased three BLI UP E9s, the "Heritage" units currently on the UP roster.  One of the E9As is an "Executive Series" DCC+sound equipped, but the other E9A and the E9B are "Stealth Series."  I'm building my first DCC layout and I want to equip these two units with decoders.  I'm not particular whether they are sound-equipped or not, but I can't find any recommendation for an appropriate decoder anywhere on the web.  Can anyone help with advice on this?

Arduino Controlled Turntables.

Time to turn my research to controlling the two turntables on my layout.

One question first. Will a DCC reversing module be needed on a turntable?

Feeder wire gauge

Hi all,

I’m at the point of soldering feeder wires.

I have a spool of 1000 feet of 24 gauge solid two wire telephone wire I picked up years ago on sale.  Good quality in two colours.

I’m not sure if that is too small.

my system is Digitrax and I’m planning to use 3-4 boosters in total the biggest being 5 amps.  They will be located around the layout and separated by gaps and isolated.  They will communicate using the Digitrax bus. Track is Peco code 83.

Wiring DCC vs. DC for One Train Operation

Which is simpler to wire for one train operation? DC or DCC?
