The Border Between Prototypical and Ridiculous Designs

Good Morning Modelers,

I've been planning a future Amtrak Layout that will model #69 Northbound (NYC to Montreal). I'm planning a 'starting point' in Albany (yes, skipping NYC) and going only partway to Montreal, hitting some landmark stops along the way. Era, would be 2010-ish so that I can include the Adirondack Dome Car (a work in progress creation).

Podcast, and trees

I've been working on creating trees, and wrote a blog post w/ lots of photos:

Podcast time, and trees - LOTS of trees

Here's one of the photos...

Soybeans in containers

A picture in the august Trains showed a train of containers on the way to be loaded with soybeans.

How are the soybeans packaged to go into the containers?  Not loose like the old boxcar method i'm sure.

QSI Decoder from Older Atlas MP15AC

I have an older Atlas MP15AC that came with a QSI sound decoder.  My decoder stopped working and I contacted QSI to see if they have a replacement.  However, this is quite an older decoder and wanted to see if a newer decoder from SoundTraxx or ESU Loksound would be a better way to go.  However, my concern is that there seems to be some unique wiring from the motor to the board (2 small yellow capacitors soldered to the motor; see photo).  Additionally, there are two unique plug in clips for the decoder and special connectors for the cab headlight.  If I went with a

HLCX Color?

Hi - I'm trying to model a GP38-2 that belongs to the Lake County Railroad.  The color it has is a pretty common one for Helm Leasing GP38's, but I can't seem to match it.  Does anyone know an off-the-shelf color that matches?  I don't mind mixing, but if anyone has used something that works, I'd love to find out which one it is!

Thanks!!!

Turnout Wiring

Just finished reading in MRH the article on wiring turnouts frogs.  Is this required on a DC layout as well?

Plan check 2.2

Thank you for the feedback! After mulling over your ideas I decided to get rid of the return loops and go twice around the room. So here are more details

HO scale std gauge

California/Nevada desert / mountain mining shortline, late 1950's steam

2%-2.5% grade

Short trains 6-8(10?) cars

Original idea for branch( based on Tecopa Railroad). 4% - 7% grade-push empties up, back loads down

Not sure of extending branch to yard, I don't want 3 tracks under window

 Longer sidings with multiple industries

A Place....

I am struggling with the attachment process currently but have decided some difficult choices and wanted to put them down in writing.

The section known as David's siding was once two different scenes but has now been combined into a passing siding running the full scene with a small yard used to cut off/add to trains per capacity.  This section will be at the base of the grade at Old Fort Loops in the garage area.
