Sergent Couplers on Trueline Rolling Stock
One of the most frustrating parts of installing Sergent couplers is the spring that provides some friction for the coupler in the pocket. Fitting between the coupler post and a slot in the coupler, it can take a few lost springs before getting comfortable with this task.

Bits & Pieces
Not a lot happening lately on the railroad, but a few things. The picture below is the "after" shot of my ceiling repair from the water damage. The dummy return air vent covers an opening in the drywall that I purposely left open for future leaks (an optimist?) Although my drywall mud work isn't very good, it will pass the casual glance test. Besides, who should be looking at the ceiling anyway..... look at the railroad!

Baton Rouge Southern Layout Journal - 2010 Edition, volume 1
Those of you following my work last year will note that I haven't gotten nearly as far as I had hoped. The good news is I've had fun along the way, and tried some new things.
The latest foamcore project
A few years ago I was taking my wife to a crafts shop in Marion, PA when I came upon the perfect trackside structure. It was a grain feed depot alongside a railroad spur. I made it a point to return someday and take some photos. However, I procrastinated and when I recently returned, motivated by the purchase of an ERTL 1:64 scale Grain Feed Set, the business had transferred to a pellet dealership. The plan was to marry the ERTL set with a scratchbuilt structure that was inspired by the structure in Marion.
Putting Decoders In Old Locos
I've often been told that it's not worth the effort to convert older locos to DCC. I can understand why. However, has anyone tried to "upgrade" these old locos to more modern wheels, drive train, gears, etc? I'm just curious. On the surface it sounds like a lot of work. I have a number of N-Scale locos that are 15-25 years old. I would rather see them running than "gut" them to operate a dummies. Has anyone tried upgrading older stuff? Can it be done within reasonable time, ability and financial limits?

turnout points
Pondering a shift to N scale I have been experimenting with laying turnouts in code 55. It is my first experience with soldering to PCB ties and I find the change a good one. I have not bought any Fast-tracks tools yet but am using their rail and ties. I think they have revolutionized the hobby and will contribute greatly to the growth of n scale because of the ease of making good track.
ANE turnout review
I read the ANE turnout smartswitch reveiw with interest as I have 20 installed on my layout.
My experience with these is not wholly good.
I have to say I was drawn to this product by its simplicity and small size (tortoise take up a lot of space) and its functionality. I think its concept is great and the ease of programming first class.
However the down side has been a few problems that remain unresolved although the customer support from ANE has been prompt and friendly.
Atlas C420 Retrofit Help
I am trying to retrofit an Atlas HO C420 "Silver Series" w/ DCC and sound. This will be my first DCC conversion. I am using the QSI Revalution A decoder. I have purchased the "A" frame weight from Atlas that is used in the "Gold Series" for this engine along w/ TDS 120 speakers. No problem w/ the decoder and weight. I am planning to wire the two (2) speakers in parallel as recommended by QSI. The speakers arrived w/ a "protection resistor" taped to the outside of each packet containing the speakers.
