Program Track - Dumb Question

Working on my on an area of my layout that is in a hidden area with the workshop. In addition to the other "regular track" in the shop area, I wanted to add a spur for a programming track. My initial design calls for use of a turnout from the main to the P. track. For a number of reasons this connection (turnout) would be cumbersome and I am realy not happy with what I have come up with so far. Then it occured to me that I really don't need to connect the two. I mean, all of the track is hidden anyway.

Short Movie of the IoS Railway

Last week I made a short movie from my Isle of Skye Railway.

Twin Track Freight House

I'm looking for an HO freight/transfer house that will allow railroad access on two sides. Ideallly, it would be a brick structure.

I like the looks of the Better Than Scratch Freight House, which could work with a couple of modifications.

I am also considering the Lyndon Freight House from Creative Laser Design

Has anyone seen anything similar on their travels that I've missed? I've already looked at

Operations Poll

This is a quick poll to see how people operate their layouts.

the question is this; when you operate do you start your session with everything staged or have you developed your plan well enough to allow you to finish a session and pick up exactly where you left off?

the reason I ask this is I am about to start operating (april 24th) and I am thinking of starting this railroad on one specific day and then just keep moving the calendar forward. I guess something similar to what Joe is doing on his own layout.

Foam... gluing it and cutting it.

Okay, so far my adventures in foam scenery have generally involved taking one or two sheets, of assorted thicknesses, and carving away at it with a Surform tool.

Generally speaking... it works. More or less.

Decoder install: Athearn RTR SD45 & SD40T-2

I have never installed a decoder in any of the new Athearn HO RTR SD45's or SD40T-2's.  Does anyone have any pictures or descriptions of the install?

I have some bare TCS T4X - 9 pin header plug is all, no harness type.  My guess is with the SD45 the shell comes off and the decoder simply plugs in.  The SD40T-2, can you do this by removing the DB blister or is it best to take the shell off?

Thanks!

Weathering ballast for PRR track

Greetings all,

My layout is set in PA on the PRR in the late 40s early 50s.  This layout is a freelance branch line of the double mainline trackage.  I have been looking through as much material as I can for color pics. of the RR during this time.  As I have looked at the images I have seen that the mains have nice gray ballast, the sidings are more of a tan/ buff/ iron oxide color and the yards are dark gray/ black with cinders.

N-Scale CSX Dixie Line Update

I just wanted to post a quick update on the progress of my N-scale CSX Dixie Line layout. This is a modern-era layout modeling CSX's super busy single track mainline from Atlanta to Nashville through Chattanooga. I have been a member of the MRH website since the early days, visit here often and immensely enjoy the online publication. For some reason I rarely post on these forums or blogs, but I wanted to share this update with the community because I owe a great deal of credit to Joe Fugate and all of the folks involved with Model-Trains-Video.com.

Trackwork: Better options?

Let's face it, our current commercial track selection is pretty poor. Atlas and Walthers track lack the fine spike and tie plate detail that I am looking for, plus, the rail profile for both track types are complete wrong. Peco's Code 83 track system is much better than the previous two. The rail profile is very fine, and close to the prototype. Also, the flextrack exhibits decent spike and tie plate detail. The turnouts are also very nicely detail, however, at almost $40 a piece, they are cost prohibitive for all but the wealthiest modelers.
