TCS FL4 decoders Warning

Found this in a Yahoo DCC forum that might interest some and prevent frustration.

FYI.

A fellow in a DCC forum mentions that he has a new batch of TCS lighting decoders with two wires swapped. The green and blue wires were soldered in the incorrect places.

The blue (common +) is suppose to be on the outer edge however the factory had the green wire in this position and the blue wire where the green was suppose to go. Apparently the green wire is not used so there was no damage.

Weathering a Katy boxcar

Okay, it's nothing special, but this is what I'm working on this morning.  I bought one of the new MKT outside braced box cars from Athearn/Roundhouse yesterday, and I really like the Sloan Yellow paint scheme.  I found out it's not quite prototypical for my era (I model ca. 1940, Sloan paint came in in '47 or so), but I like the way it stands out against my brown rolling stock.

The trouble is, the car is not yellow, it's YELLOW!!

Work in progress, new tree line...(part2)

Hi all,

still re working my tree line, even added a red beech tree to get some variation in color. I'll be adding some more trees in the coming weeks, but first I am going to let sink in this new setting. Tree lines is give and take, that's why I am going in small steps and building it all up. ("every day I'm shoveling",lol)

Outside braced box car with vertical siding?

Does anybody know of any outside braced box cars (North American prototype only, please) which had vertical boards instead of the more common horizontal boards?  I can see a good reason for the horizontal boards, but before I give up on a silly idea I had, I thought I'd at least ask if there was ever such a prototype.

Water tower depth gauge

I'm almost finished scratch building a track-side water tower from wood and have come to wonder...does every water tank have a depth gauge?  You look at pictures, and I even took some myself a few years ago, but not all pictures show them if they are present.  Maybe the gauge is on the side opposite the camera, or behind near a ladder??  I'd think they'd be right where the incoming train operators could see them, but maybe it was placed so the local station crew could see it in

Bachmann N Scale Spectrum Acela Set, Amtrak

Hi,

the Bachmann N Scale Spectrum Acela Set, Amtrak, is on sale. It look to me like a good opportunity to increase my American stock next time I come to the states (which will be rather soon). It looks really nice and would be a good counter part to my German ICE. I only found one review and the editor wrote something about little power problems.

Does anybody have this set (in N)? How is it running? Can you recommend it?

Looking for tips and ideas on weathering a box car

I just bought this car ay my local hobby shop:

Now I'm trying to figure out what to do with it.  I'd really like to keep it yellow, or at least MKT (reminds me of my grandmother, who always had a special place for the RR that ran past the farm she grew up on), but it's too yellow right now.
