Not Dead, and New Modules!!

It's been quite a while since I've made any progress on the layout. It turns out that wedding planning takes up a ton of time in the later stages, even if you're not really doing the planning and are just going to meet people or pick up things with your fiancé lol Between that and the holidays, the layout was on the back burner for a while.

South Dakota State Railroad Museum Hill City Diorama

I have decided to help out Rick Mills at the South Dakota State Railraod Museum in Hill City with a diorama he wanted built, to represent Spearfish canyons Sandstone cliffs the dual gauge Ralroads and the Pondarosa, Spruce, paper birch and the scenery of the Black Hills of South Dakota. So this is my begining of the concept all the way to finish. So we have decided to use some models built by past modeler from the area.

Paint recommedations @Joe

@Joe,

Vallejo paint recommendations. I am in the process of updating my paint supplies. I have mostly tamiya, polyscale and some testors. I want to get into the vallejo line of paints. I will be both airbrushing as well as brush painting things. Does model air work ok for brush painting? Is there a set you could recommend that I can buy to give me a supply of assorted paints to get me started?

Many thanks.

Randy.

Middle School Model Railroad: the rise of Rock Ridge

The model railroad I’ve been building in my middle school classroom has been more or less frozen in time since students went home due to Covid last March. Teaching remotely was and remains a tremendous challenge for all parties involved, and when most students started returning to campus a few months ago the transitions and complications were even more challenging, taking a big toll on my outlook for my unique circumstances of being able to leverage my hobby interests in my professional life.

How does one prepare and then paint soft metal casting scenery items?

Speed matching locos. a challenge

I have an F& set of Athern Genesis locos both with Tsunami sound decoders. They were, sometime in the past working well as a consist. After a longish period of inactivity I started to run the again. They aren't close to running together. The A unit starts moving quickly at speed step 1 on my NCE system with the SB5 booster. The B unit doesn't budge until speed step 5 and has a slower acceleration rate.  Obviously i did something wrong so I used CV 30 to clear and reprogram the the decoders. Everything relating to speed is the same and yet the problem persists.

Shuffling around grain elevators

In 1986 Manitoba Pool Elevators decided to remove the Pool #1 elevator and replace it with the Pool C elevator from down the way.  I watched it unfold over the summer.  It wasn't something you see everyday. Click the link to read the full post.

Creating switch lists for ops

So as I begin my planning and construction of my layout, I'm beginning to think about the future ops sessions that I plan to have.

Pre-Ordering Locomotives

This is a new subject for me and searches tend to turn up lamentations about pricing and inflation, but I'm wondering how pre-order works and has worked more broadly speaking from the modelers' perspective.

How to handlay a switch

I just published a You Tube video on how I handlay a switch.  I demonstrate handlaying a #5 switch on my layout in code 70 rail.
