Grade & Train Length Investigation

While working with the Rapido CN RS-18, one of the ways to push the motor was to run at increasing larger grade levels.  These results were different than expected based on what has been implied in other discussions.  To get a better understanding of this, a series of experiments were devised to see how this engine would compare with others.  A side benefit of this exercise would be actual data on how there engines respond to changes in

Trees and more trees...

Several evenings of television netted me 9 tree top armatures. I spent Sunday giving them trunks and foliage and planted them on Monday. Just below the tracks I am getting ready to build my first town, but I figured I'd better give this hill some personality first so I'm not reaching over the miniature inhabitant's homes and shops...

Correct orientation of passenger car trucks

I have noticed on my passenger car trucks that there is often a horizontal bar on the side of the truck. See photo below. I assume it is some sort of torsion bar. Most of my cars have it mounted so that the bar is towards the center of the car. Some have it towards the outside. Is there a correct way or does it matter?

Johnstown & Maryville 2.0

Well as some of you may be aware, I am starting to tear down the current Johnstown & Maryville in preparation for a move to a new house. While its always hard to demo a layout, the new space, a FULL basement, will give me a chance to go 12' x 16', possibly as large as 12' x 20'! Thats almost double the size I have now.

To give an idea of what I have planned, here are some conceptual designs of what I am planning. This is the 12' x 16' design.

Materials to use for modeling a large passenger concourse in HO

I'm planning on scratch-building a model of a passenger concourse in HO, and I'm wondering the what is the best material to use- styrene, wood, foam core or something else or a combination of those. The original concourse was concrete steel reinforced and the model will measure about 35" long and 6" wide. It was a tall single story (12') with a clerestory down the center . The tracks stub-ended at the concourse (concrete bumpers) and platforms with butterfly sheds extended out from the concourse between tracks.

Block detection for signals on a DC layout

Kia ora fellow modelers,

Down here in New Zealand, I'm building a small DC layout recreating central California in the late 1950s, and want to set up an operating signal system that a) interlocks with turnout position b) shows red if the block ahead is assigned to another cab (remember this is DC).

I have two DC controllers, with 12 blocks assigned by 3 Atlas 215 selectors.

Micro Mark Truck Tuner in HO

My trusty Truck tuner has gone MIA so I ordered another that came in today.  It looks different than the old one but as long as it works right.  It was tight getting it in there so I thought the truck really needed to be turned.  Went to do the other half of the same truck and SNAP went the truck.  I knew it was tight but the truck shouldn't have broke.  Grabbed another one of a different brand and the exact same thing happened!   I put the tuner next to a wheel set and the tuner is noticeably  longer.  So, does this look right?

Repower and DCC/Sound for an old HO brass boxcab

Hi,

I don't have any experience with remortoring or DCC upgrades, but I want to give it a try.  I have this old brass boxcab of unknown manufacture (although KTM is stamped on motor.) I would like to repower it and have it running under DCC/Sound and perhaps keep-alive.  It would be used for switching and running on small layouts.  I have been researching what others have done, learning about some basics.

Stock Number for Stryene Sheets with Corrugated Pattern

1) Please list the stock number(s) for Evergreen or Plastruct styrene Sheets with a corrugated pattern for HO scale

2). Does M. B. Klein carry this item?

Thanks for your help.
