Reader request - Barnhart log loader?
We received this request from a reader by snail mail, so we're posting it here to see if any of you have an answer for them.
Do you have any pictures of a Barnhart log loader? Even an old picture of it? I have looked all over and haven't found anything.
Please let me know!
Also do you have any info on modeling an HO logging operation, info on things like Shays or log cars?

Height clearence for Autoracks, Woodchip cars, Intermodal, etc..
Hey guys, getting ready to precut all the parts for the first new layout module this evening (hopefully) after we get some yard work done and wondering about the height requirements for modern equipment. I know with my 50's stuff 4 to 41/2 is plenty, but it would be nice to be able to run loaded intermodal and the like every now and then or when I have people over to run trains. Despite having the layout set in the 1954, I do have an interest with modern stuff. Looking for actual height from bottom of wheel - not including flange - to the top of the car.
Address Changes for Broadway Limited C-16
New to the forum.
I have several Broadway Limited C-16 engines that are factory set to address 3, but I have been trying to change the decoder address to their respective road engine numbers. I have a Digitrax Super Chief digital system and have tried to reprogram the address, but have had no success I receive strange codes when I attempt program a new address that I cannot find in the Digitrax literature.
Santa Fe - The Surf Line (1950’s)
Hello all
i am currently building a large HO layout using many of the features from a Keith Jordan layout from Model Railroader magazine, issue August 2004.
I was wondering if anyone else had built or used part of that layout design. The Surf Line is a fascinating piece of trackage, and ties in with my interest of citrus industry modelling too.

Best ways to deal with strict operators who refuse to understand they're not running a real railroad
New poster here. After checking the archives and not finding what I looking for I decided to make an account to see if anyone might be able to offer some advice for a major issue the model railroad club I belong to has been facing for the past year and a half. As we all know, Model Railroading is supposed to be a fun hobby. It's supposed to be a hobby where you get a chance to build and run your own miniature railroad empire and share the fun with your fellow modelers.
Paper Mill Kitbash
Why?
- The Walther's paper mill is nowhere big enough1.
- Why waste a perfectly good wall against the backdrop where it will never be seen?
Construction has been slow, because I am planning each move carefully, to avoid any "Oh %#@! it doesn't fit right!" moments. The result has been that on average about two pieces get added each day.
1 Actually, this is just going to be the admin and shipping building. The main machine building will be a big low-relief thing next to it.

IAIS's West End - Saving (cab) face - DONE
My recent work on IAIS GP8 481 had an unintended benefit: It provided a surplus IC orange, frog-eye-equipped nose from the Intermountain GP10 that I could use to model the scene in the Erik Rasmussen pic below, with the last remains of GP8 7976 languishing in the weeds near the Bluffs enginehouse:
Help identifying S Scale 0-4-0 Steam Switcher
Hello All,
Could I get some help identifying this S Scale Steam swiitcher. It's made of metal, and weighs 1 Lb 7 oz.
Inherited as one of several engines from my father who was avid modeler. I'm consdering which to keep for my kids and which to sell.
No mfgr notation anywhere. I'm wondering if it's a painted black brass type?
Pics attached.
It runs though think it needs some attention to run on a track unassisted

Very Unique Waterfront Switching Layout
I have been fascinated with this fellows work on a pier terminal building. And all the while as I read thru his numerous postings and great photos, I assumed he was building it to add into a bigger layout. But today I just discovered he was actually building a stand alone switching layout.

Modelling canals and railroads
Historically, there are many places in the US where canals and railroads were connected geographically or economically. Besides the C&O canal, recently mentioned elsewhere, And of course there's the Delaware and Hudson Company, where an early and successful canal was gradually replaced by a long-lived railroad.
There are a number of lesser-known places in the northeastern US where railroads were built on the towpaths of former canals.
