Building a GE 85 ton steeple cab: The latest print has arrived

My updated 3D print of the 85 ton steeple cab arrived this week. All my previous print flaws were corrected, and additions printed as well.

Updated 85 Ton GE comparing the two models

Generally you can't tell much for differences from this shot, but the big difference is the beefed up truck .

Middlesex Kitbash is Finished

Well the kitbash of Atlas "Middlesex Mfg. kit is now finished. It has become Brown County Warehouses, Inc. located in Green Bay WI. on my HO scale CNW Peninsula Div. Railroad. Here are some pictures of the completed building. The first two show it in it's location and the others are more close up and a little detail.

Any use for "Steel" rail O Scale I think

I was given a bunch of steel rail "O Scale" I think. Maybe 20-30 pounds of it along with a bunch of pre stained ties that were in old Walthers boxes. I am thinking of taking it to the metal salvage  but maybe people still have a use for it?

Reliability: Swing gate vs Dropdown vs Liftout

I am looking for your experiences in utilizing the different methods and wondering which style  have you found to be the most reliable.

Which style seems to work best?

Which one requires the least maintenance for trouble free operation?

I have seen ALL of the blog postings on what people have built, their problems and solutions, but am asking those who have used more than one if not all three about  their experiences with them.

Thanks for your input

Randy

Treelines - A Backdrop on the 8th Sub

I was looking for another project of limited scope that would still deliver some impact, so settled on finishing the backdrop behind my Junction City yard.  The yard is supposed to be on a valley floor adjacent to some river bottomland like the prototype UP yards at Riverdale and Ogden, UT, as well as the former D&RGW Ogden yard now used by a shortline.  The basics of the trees are similar to those needed for backdrops for other prototypes as well.

45' or 48' containers ???

Hey Gang,

So, I think I understand that container sizes are based on Twenty Foot Equivalent Units (TEU). Apparently most container ship holds are based on these TEUs and so 45', 48' and 53' containers are used for North American transport only. I have seen where 45' containers are used in trans oceanic shipping but I do not have a source for that info.

I still see 48' well cars being used to haul 1 or 2 TEU units in the lower stack and anything as big as 53' on the double stack.

Does plaster stick to styrene?

Having finally gotten around to making a mold for my bridge footings, I'm anxious to try it out. It's the first time I've made any sort of mold though besides a rock mold with latex rubber. I made it with plastic for a " For Sale" type sign which I assume is styrene. The plastic is soft enough to lightly score with a knife and snap. I'd like to use the mold more than once so I wonder if I will be able to get the casting out without tearing up the mold. Will the plaster stick to the mold?  Should I use a release agent like wet water or maybe some crisco?

covering seams in foam

Question:

I'm doing a shelf layout and have decided to add blue foam as the base. My layout will be done in 4' sections so I can easily move them and change them if needed. I can get a 2'x8' sheet of blue 1/2" foam for $9.00. cutting the foam into 2' sections and butting them together would be easy instead of cutting the 4' section and having 12" of waste left over.

What do you use to hide the seams between the pieces of foam? is there a specific tape used to hide the seam?'

AT&SF COLORADO DIVISION-HO

This beautiful layout in the Denver Area was part of Rocky Op North 2013. This Great example of a great running layout that with a very effective operations plan.  Their were 8 operators and owner acting as dispatcher. Great fun had by all.

Steam loco weathering services

Without being maudlin or macabre, my recently diagnosed medical issues make time an important factor in my model railroading decisions. I enjoy my lone wolf operations, but I would like my shiny new locos -- Bachmann Shay, Climax and Mogul -- to look well-used. I simply don't have the luxury of time to learn new skills like airbrushing and powder weathering. Not seeking to win prizes or appear in magazines. I would just like my locos to look like they had been on the job for a couple of decades on a short line without a wash rack.
