#5 turnout- hinge or not?

Have a couple of these to make, and wondering if I should hinge the points or leave it all one rail (the closure and the point).  Prototypical is for a hinge but the #5 isn't that long I think to go to the trouble.  On the other hand can the throw bend things enough for a nice fit?  It will be motor switched, and code 70 rail.

White glue vs matt medium for gluing ballast - your opinion please

In another of my threads about using 2" foam as sub-roadbed it was suggested to use matt medium instead of white glue to adhere the ballast with the reasoning that matt medium remains flexible thus transferring less vibration / noise than white glue. Your experience and thoughts are requested. Thanks!

Back from Switzerland and want to order track for delivery on my return from San Francisco trip on the 10th. It was a really great honeymoon and included trains! Some pics to follow.

Car float apron track details

I have built the Walthers Cornerstone car float kit 933-3152. The car float apron kit 933-3068 is unavailable. Can anyone provide track details from this apron such that I can build my own apron..?

What type of Soldering Iron to use for feeder wires

Hi, about to start my N scale layout.  I used a weller soldering iron to solder my droppers to the track for my HO layout.

With the smaller scale track I was wondering whether to by a resistance soldering iron to minimise the chance of melting ties.

Any thoughts/experience pout there in the community?

Micro Mark have a small unit on sale which prompted this post.

Cheers

Building complex crossings

Hi,

Once of the nicer features of the MRH forums is that if you maintain a Wordpress blog, you can simply copy/paste an entire blog update directly here and it formats correctly, even the links to larger clickable images work!

The details follow in the next post, below.

Micro engineering code 55 N scale question?

Hi All, I got some code 55 unweathered  code 55 flextrak today and looking at it I notice that there are places where the molded on spike heads are missing. Every section has them missing at the same spots so it doesn't look like shipping damage, more like the dies didn't get a full shot of plastic or something similar. I've never used this N scale track before so am curious if anyone else has noticed this problem? ...Dave Branum

Procrastinating or what?

OK. I'm in a funk. I've got all these tortoise switch machines that, I assume, can do power routing to my frogs but want to plan for DCC controls of the mainline switches (future JMRI) but really don't feel confident about getting started.
