Scenery - Structures
Kit, or scratchbuild?
Greetings!
I'm in process of building a Free-Mo module, just a 'scenic element' (straight, no industries), and while I've managed to catch the general feel of the area, I'd like to try getting a bit more 'prototypical' with a structure in the view. It's a farmhouse in the Hanover PA area, I've seen a couple here and there, but my attempts to find a kit that's even close have been for naught.

Scenery time: Filling in the rocks
Time to move one to some more scenery and fill in a bare spot with rocks. I will be using both my own moulds and commercial ones to cast the rocks.

2 evenings - rebuild Heljan roundhouse
I found an unpainted built-up model of the Heljan roundhouse at a railroad club tag sale. I wiped some mortar into one panel of painted bricks, dusted it with weathering powder, and it looked really good, so I decided to break it down and give it a 2-evening makeover with simple stuff I can get from a craft or hobby store, using only moderate building skills. It would be even easier starting with anew, unbuilt model.

Conserving historic buildings as models
I always thought this trackside building in Hadley, MA looked interesting. It is in severe disrepair and probably cannot be preserved. I hope to make an accurate model to save a version of it.

Building the Buildings
I did not do a lot of work on the layout through the summer, but I never stopped building stuff, specifically buildings.
A couple of new houses for the town. Got to house the mine workers.
Paper flats
Here's a site I just found. http://jeanpierrelarouz.canalblog.com Now, don't get mad at me. LOL It's in French. BUT: There are lot's of flats for paper models. I find the one I want, size it as best I can on screen. Use snipping tool and copy/save in jpg. You can go from there. I realize it's a lot of kid stuff, as "do you want to model Renault vehicles"? But I did find a few items usable. A fence. A few buildings. And what I liked about this site is the fact that there are roofs and the detail is good. Very usable and "free".
Intermodal terminal images
I am looking for a panoramic photo of an intermodal terminal, either shore or inland based, as a photo backdrop for my new layout. As shown in the attached drawing, the length of the terminal is roughly 13-14 feet. The grid is 1"= 1'. If someone has a better idea for a backdrop scene that will fit these dimensions, I'm all ears.
"modeling" fog
In another thread, jTrackin asked how to make fog short of breaking your phone's camera lens. Here's a brief description of how I transformed a photo using post processing. Others can comment on in-camera effects.
First here is the before (with a hastily photoshopped sky) and the after.
