Scenery - Structures

Paper building kitbashing

Over the past weekend I spent some time making the Flin Flon smelter area look more industrial.  A few years ago I bought a CD of steel industry textures and kits from Clever Models <http://www.clevermodels.net> with the plan to use some or all of the items on the CD on the smelter and other areas.

Milk traffic in Georgia and other southeastern Atlantic states

Hi All,

In his book “Mid sized and manageable track plans”, Iain Rice has an interesting plan for a layout set in the Georgia/South Carolina border area, and includes a creamery as an on-line industry with its own spur, with a comment to the effect that it was not just the North East that carried a lot of milk traffic, but no more is said than that!

Does anyone have any info on this? Were there dedicated milk cars, was this in churns, or were there bespoke milk cars containing class-lined steel tanks for the bulk transport of milk?

How to stop structures from glowing when lighted?

I have the Walther's Machine Shop underway, about ready to assemble the sides onto the base.  I plan to LED light it along with most everything else I build in the future for the layout.

The problem I'm going to have to deal with is the glow through the styrene that occurs with lighted structures.  A building that glows in the dark seems a bit unrelistic and counter productive.

Gluing problems

I'm trying to assemble a Walthers deck girder bridge. It's unpainted.  For the life of me I cannot get the bottom bracing glued to the side girders.  I've tried Plastruct Plastic Weld and ACC to the parts properly clamped together, but the joint won't stick and it comes apart.  I mean, not even quasi-sticking together; I remove the clamps and the two pieces just come undone.

Any suggestions before I launch this kit out the window?

#NMRAContest

The NMRA is having a social media contest. The idea is for everyone to have the same starting point with a simple kit and bash and bang it into something you are proud of. You can of course build it as per the kit instructions as well. A well built kit is miles ahead of a poor kitbash job. Anyway, I thought this was a fun idea. You post as you build on the NMRA Facebook page.

Here's the details:

We are introducing an NMRA first!! Its our first Social Media Kit building contest.
