The Georgetown & Allen Mountain Railroad V 6

This is the sixth version of the Georgetown & Allen Mountain Railroad.

LED lighting on 3 deck layout

Over the past year or so I purchased some LED lighting from Amazon,...all of it Barrina brand. My initial purchases was 6 of the 4000K units

A Place....

Here is where I'm going on the changes.  Trains are operable right now through the loops in the garage.  There are a number of viewing angles that make the change viable/worth while.  The next step will be much more of a struggle to get started.  I need to relocate some reasonably well done scenes at least to some degree.  Will do some final photos of the Spiral Tunnel area.

Layout Design s/w that can open a .dxf file

I have a .dxf file for a layout design, and would like to open and edit (e.g. modify) the plan but am unsure if there's an existing model railroad design software product out there than can do so. The original - that was given to me by the author - was originally developed in AutoCAD, which is not only beyond my budget but also too steep of a learning curve for a layman like myself.

Any commercial options out there that can open a .dxf format file, that are geared towards a hobbyist like myself?

Turnout on grade

Somewhere I got the notion that having a turnout on a grade was bad for reliability. Is that so? Assuming the grade is constant through the turnout, so the turnout is flat, just not level with respect to the floor.

In my track planning, I'm looking at a choice between:

a) shortening a grade so it lies between turnouts, resulting in a 2.5% grade when I was trying to stick to 2% or less,

b) moving a turnout, resulting in shortening my yard,

Layout Feedback - Phase 1

I’d appreciate any feedback you can offer on my initial layout design.   In summary, my goal with this is a switching layout, set in midwestern city, during the transition era.  I do value simplicity and realism of a design.

A Moral Question

I am thinking of running my layout using motive power of the Montreal, Maine and Atlantic Railroad, and am very much aware of the tragedy that occurred in Lac Megantic, Quebec.  I want to be respectful: would modeling this railroad be insulting to my Canadian friends?

To Helper Or Not

Hi all,

I am making a substantial layout design choice and would love to hear what you all think:

The Border Between Prototypical and Ridiculous Designs

Good Morning Modelers,

I've been planning a future Amtrak Layout that will model #69 Northbound (NYC to Montreal). I'm planning a 'starting point' in Albany (yes, skipping NYC) and going only partway to Montreal, hitting some landmark stops along the way. Era, would be 2010-ish so that I can include the Adirondack Dome Car (a work in progress creation).
