Layout sound

I am in the process of designing and building a modular layout loosely based on West Side Lumber that ran in Tuolumne County in California.

I will have a sawmill and I am interested in having sounds of lumber being cut. Other scenes like a hobo camp and banjos. Other areas will have woodsman cutting down trees and a spar tree loading skels.

I am interested in your experience on which sound modules/methods you have used to add a variety of background sound to a layout.

Starting Over - A layout experiment

I've chosen to completely demolish (nicely) my current layout for many reasons. First, it took most of the basement when my boys were infants. Now that they are no longer "afraid" of the basement, they venture down there to play hockey/soccer when some winter days are too cold in the small amount of space available, it was time to increase that. Secondly, I discovered that there was just too much layout for the time that I could dedicate to it as well as inconvenient places around a few high usage doors and hallways.

Painting Acrylic Fence Supports

I just installed an 8" high 1/4" thick acrylic glass fence around the front edge of my sectional layout, partly to keep rolling stock from falling off if derailed, and partly to protect it during moves.

Currently the vertical fence supports stick up above the fascia approximately 7.5" and are bare wood. They are 1 x 2 pieces with a 1/4" routed groove.

Layout Update #5A

The section of the layout that is in the video is where the double track mainline goes in/out of the west helix, the branch line goes in a loop above the west helix, and the town of Michaelson is against two walls.  The depth of this section is 30 inches and so I found that it would be easier to remove each module and work on them when I was sitting down as opposed to stretching over them after they are screwed down in place on their support structure.

Mystery Bridge

Mystery Bridge, You may be asking why we call it mystery bridge.

First real layout, progress update...

Whilst I sip my hot cup of java, it's time for an update!

Layout plans

I would like to find a shelf type layout with street running.

The Calico Gold Co. ~ A Portable Mini-layout in On18

Today I'm starting on a new project: a portable mini-layout in On18. While remaining portable for shows and events, the layout is also being designed to "plug in" to my On30 Thunder Mesa layout as a feeder line. As the build progresses, I'll be be posting updates here on this blog, along with more in-depth articles on the TMMC website.

Here's a track plan and concept illustration for the simple 2' x 5' layout:
