Kadee 505 coupler conversion

The kit includes a #5 coupler.  Can a #148 or #158 (with a #242 draft gearbox) be substituted?

DT & I Large Scale Boxcar Weathering Project (Work in Progress)

After the success of weathering my first large scale boxcar back this winter, I decided to tackle another long forgotten project. Years ago, another large scale modeler Brian Brigg's passed away. He was a excellent modeler, scratch and kitbashing large scale projects. In the following post, I will explain some background and get into the model.

Here are some links to some of his projects.

IC&E Scrap Gondola Kitbash

The IC&E had a small fleet of scrap gons that were cut down from 4000cuft coal gons. Walthers happens to make the prototype 50' Coal Gondola that I found on ebay. I compared the model with prototype photos and decided how far to cut the car down. I used blue masking tape as a guide and made the cut a little higher so I didn't take off any extra material. Once it was marked off I used a dremel to cut off as close to the blue tape as possible. Once I had the rough cut I flipped the car over and sanded it down until it was even and square.

Indentifying a tank car; need help

I'm looking for a tank care for my 1974 collection.

I came across this image and am wondering if this type of tank car is available in HO scale.

Tank cars to an oil dealer (Union 76) late 60s / early 70s

Hi all,

Following my topic on chlorine tank cars and lots of reading (including MRH issues 72 and 73, a must-read excellent article on tank cars by Tony Thompson), i was looking into an oil dealer (union 76) that was present in the area i model (Pasadena) in the 60s.

I wanted to check the following:

Older Brass engine troubles

I have an old HO Scale United Brass Steam Engine that was given to me by an older gentleman years ago.

I had a hobby shop put in DCC sound and a new motor.

The problem is that it doesn't run well.  It did at one point but not now.  After a bit of investigation with the lights out and the use of a multimetre, I think I see the problem.

Strobe Lights and Beacons

Hi everyone,

How do you model locomotive beacon lights from the 1960s through the 1980s in HO? Particularly earlier styles like the Pyle Beacon? Light types and detail #'s would be appreciated. Thanks!

What to do with an old Bachmann Consolidation?

I'm just getting started back up modeling. I have a bunch of rolling stock from back in the past, but the one item I have that I'm not sure what to do with is a Bachmann 2-8-0 Consolidation from about 1988. It's still new in the box actually.

I bought a Tsunami DCC decoder to put in it, but then I took a closer look at the loco. It's got the old-style pancake motor in it and the two halves of the frame are energized by the locomotive wheels. The tender trucks are the really cheap snap-in style with plastic wheels and no power pickup.

Best way to paint a coach?

I’m relatively new here but have been reading a lot of great information over the past couple of months. I have 2 HO brass coaches I’d like to paint and was wondering if there’s a preferred way to paint them. I figure on painting the interior and exterior a light gray, then the outside in the final colors. Any suggestions on masking the window openings, painting the window frames, adding windows? Thanks, AL
