New Videos, Painting and weathering casting to look like wood

I did a two part video of how I paint cast parts to look like wood.  For the demonstration I used two Bachmann On30 side dump cars but you could use this method on anything you want to look like wood, plastic or metal.

Replacing Athearn Genesis Wheels in Freight Cars with Intermountain

I have a few Athearn Genesis freight cars and I want to replace the wheels with Intermountain wheels. I'm not a fan of how the Athearn Geneses wheels can just drop out of the bottom of the truck side frame when you pick it up (although maybe that is prototypical), and I'm trying to standardize my fleet.

Using the Athearn trucks, has anyone tried gently drilling out the center of the hole where the axle goes in the truck side frame to accommodate a larger axle, like the Intermountain one's?

With a larger hole and axle it would solve the drop out problem.

Sodium Hydrosulfide - What Type of Tank Car?

Does anyone know what AAR Type or DOT number of tank car is used for Sodium Hydrosulfide service?

I have notes that it is a corrosive material shipped in dedicated acid tank cars, but which type, I don't know.

Or does anyone have pictures of a modern era one? (anywhere from 1990 onward?)

I have not been able to find a picture or AAR type online.

Sodium Hydrosulfide is used in the pulping process, and I have notes that the mill in West Point, VA received 1 to 2 loads a week.

HO Switchers?

Why don’t HO manufacturers produce more diesel switch engines?  If you look at Athearn, Atlas, Scale Trains, and few others they produce numerous road engines for the prototype ALCO, EMD, and GE.

Every prototype had/has switchers work yards, handling local deliveries, or even in short line operations.

As far as MSRP, a switcher with DCC and sound is almost comparable with road unit pricing

Bachmann EZ App Locos

Good afternoon.

After being told both "yes" and "no" by Bachmann, I am reaching out to you folks to determine whether their EZ App Equipped locos can be controlled by conventional DCC systems, i.e., NCE/Digitrax/MRC or only via a cell phone.

My guess control is only via cell phone and, if correct, also ask if any of you have removed Bachmann's factory installed components and installed conventional control and sound boards in any of their steam engines, specifically their 2-6-0.

Adding keep alive

Has any one found the negative connection point on a Bachmann HO DCC equipped 70 ton diesel original board for adding a keep alive.. thanks

Bachmann 4-4-0 (New Tool) radii below 18" (HO scale)?

Hi all,

I am in the process of building up a small layout for the upcoming Xmas holiday season (small oval), and i was wondering if anyone has any experience with the new tool Bachmann 4-4-0 and curves below 18". Preferably circa 40cm radius. What is the minimum that it can reliably operate on? I am well aware of the recommended 18" (and i favor large radii in genera,... I have something like 32" on my layout), but i am wondering if anyone has actually tried running these on less than 18".

ACF Flexi Flow Hoppers

Eric, I want to thank you for bringing this new product to my attention again. Your reporting and photos from the Amherst show were very well done,....

Rapido Trains displayed a wide range of their models. The ACF Flexi flo hoppers are insanely detailed. Three HO scale versions will be produced.

Tracking down an underframe plate for a MDC/Roundhouse 'Harriman' Coach

Recently I nabbed a three-pack of Roundhouse labeled Harriman Coach Cars done up in what I guess is the Union Pacific two-tone Greyhound scheme, but lettered for the CNW. No idea if CNW ever had Greyhound cars or not, but the price was generous for coaches and they looked to be in great condition. However, turns out one of the underframe plates for the cars is missing (the seller appologized as they thought all three plates were in there when they checked and has offered a partial refund) and naturally I would like to get a replacement.
