Locos and rolling stock

Mantua or Tyco 4-4-0 General

Folks,

I want to buy a Mantua or Tyco 4-4-0 General that is in good, runable condition. If you have one that you would part with or know where I can get one, please let me know.

extended swing coupler boxes

I am building a passenger train for my new layout. I picked up some Athern blue box rolling stock, American limited full-width diaphragms, and Kadee 451 extended swing coupler gear boxes with whisker couplers.

here's what you get from KadeeThe squares are various thickness shims used to set the gear box at the correct height, and glued to the underside of the floor, after removing the Talgo couplers from the trucks.

Tank Cars for Agriculture Uses

I would like to add a tank car or two to my rolling stock collection for my rural switching layout.  I have a Genesis 33k gal propane tank.  Considering how hard it is to find one with the correct dates, it may be my only one.

Queston on smoke box color on UP 844

When Athearn Genisis made the last run of the HO UP 844 a year or so ago I purchased one, but being in the middle of layout construction, I put it on the shelf unopened.

Today I decided to open it and put it on the layout.  I was totally shocked by the smoke box and the fire box being pure bright white, not the usual smokey silver color.  Looks awful.  I didn't even take the tender out of the packaging.

when did Walthers buy PROTO 2000

When did Walthers buy out the Proto 2000 line from Life-Like?

And what years did Life-Like produce the FA-2 in HO?

Upgrade Tyco pulpwood loads

I must really like messing around with throw away junk !

So, here is my next project. Working with some paint and so forth to make the Tyco pulpwood loads look a little more realistic. I can't seem to find any internet hits where someone has does this. Certainly, they have. I just can't find them.

Dr Joe’s Amazing Versatile High Performance Acrylic Thinner !

A few years ago I picked up three HOn3 Blackstone/Soundtraxx 20th anniversary boxcars at a discounted price. My plan was to give them a coat of appropriate colored Vallejo paint and then add new decals to add some economical boxcars to the roster.

Out came the airbrush and within a few minutes the purple and lavender paint job was gone and I thought I was on my way. However after the paint dried the underlying lettering was very visible. That is where the project stalled.

Whenever I walked by the layout I could almost hear those boxcars snickering at me...

Older Lenz Decoder Settings

I have just received an older Atlas model that appears to have the older Lenz non sound dual mode decoder in it. It runs fine, very slow creeping speed at step 1 on 28 speed steps. HOWEVER...the locomotive makes some serious loud humming noise while it operates. I have verified the jumper is in the DCC position and I am not trying to run it on DC power. This model would be spendiforous if not for the motor hum.  I have no previous experience with Lenz decoders in any scale.

I found this:
