Locos and rolling stock

Thoughts on BLI Locos?

So what's the general consensus on Broadway Limited  Steam Locos?  I think I might buy one but they are a pretty chunk of change and the most I've ever spent on a loco so I thought I'd see what folks here thought.  Just general opinions on the detail, sound and performance.  Plus will my lone little Bachmann 2-6-0 look horrible beside it......

I'm looking at a Mikado and dreaming but the more practical side of me that knows the size of my layout and the curves is thinking Consolidation.

Scratchbuilt Flatcar Project

I have been working on scratch building a flatcar in On30 for my Monashee Pass Railway. The car is based on a SP (Southern Pacific) narrow guage prototype. I created the drawing templates below with a CAD program and developed some of my own construction techniques. I also used the article by Russ Watson in the 2008 On30 Annual to guide me along.

Carbody Filter Detail

Hello

I'm looking for advice on a particular locomotive detail part. I want to retrofit a pair of Norfolk and Western RS-11s to be more accurate for their paint scheme. This means replacing the horn with a proper 5-chime and adding a detail part over the existing carbody filters. Here is a photo for reference: http://rr-fallenflags.org/nw/nw327ads.jpg

I also want to kitbash a T-6 using an S-4 as the base for the project. These locomotives also had similar carbody filters as the RS-11 and here's a photo link: http://rr-fallenflags.org/nw/nw48ags.jpg

Stripping Acrylic Paint

What would you use to strip acrylic paint from heavyweight passenger cars without harming the plastic?

New car owner, patched reporting marks

It's common that freight cars get new owners. They often only patch the reporting marks and do not repaint the entire car. For model railroaders of modern eras it is a possibility to include cars from fallen flags in their roster - they only have to do the same as the prototype. I'm looking for more information:

- Is it obligatory for a new owner to at least patch the reporting marks? Or could it happen that a car has a new owner but no visible change on the car?

What method do you use to get a believable paint fade on rolling stock?

I did my first "paint fade" on a boxcar today and it didn't turn out real well. I may have taken on a difficult color (blue) and used white craft paint thinned down and brushed on. The color of the fade was fine but it was so uneven and had many little specks in it. The car was an old boxcar and wasn't particularly valuable but before I attempt a fade on a nice car I really need to get some advice.

What method do you use? Do you match the paint to the paint on the model? Acrylic or solvent based? Brush or airbrush?

Need Coupler Advice on Trix Big Boy

I am hoping to get advice from our resident experts in Kadee coupler options and/or coupler advice for an HO scale Trix Big Boy. I pulled this (much-loved) loco from my display case yesterday only to find the tender's coupler missing. After much panic & with extraordinary luck, I found the missing coupler. It is one of the Marklin/Trix pull-out variety which will require some crazy glue when I do final re-install. However, the original equipment coupler's height is FAR TOO LOW to provide reliable operation.

Sound for N diesel

Thinking of purchasing a new loco and never having any experience with sound decoders I would like some advice.Picked out a GP38 and digitrax decoder SDN011A0. I prefer the 4 axle loco.Being a very senior citizen I could not do the installation but I note that one of the MRH sponsors would handle that. I think it is a Kato loco.I use the Digitrax DCC system. Any advice? Do it or steer clear of this - maybe someone has a different loco to start with.Thanks. Tom

Securing a loco to a flat car

I have an old 0-4-0 that I want to chain down to a flat car for shipment elsewhere.  It's the first loco I bought with my own money, so I want it moving, and getting her running again is, at least for now, impossible.  How would I secure her for shipment.

Broadway Limited Imports 2015 product guide

Just got mine in the mail and was impressed to see some nice new steam locomotives on the horizon.

I will be keeping my eyes out for their Milwaukee road 4-8-4 S3's  #261
