Locos and rolling stock

couplers and trucks for rail line boxcars

I am having trouble fitting Kadee 714 couplers and Micro Trains Arch Bar trucks, the trucks go too far into the body and the wheels rub on the underside. Any help or advice would be appreiciated

Tourist train pics and a question

I’m putting together a tourist train to run at the club, which will, when I have my own layout, be a primary passenger train.  The loco is an out of the box Bachamnn 2-6-0, with weights added to the tender.  Engineer and light weathering to come…

Unknown Flatcar Type

Can anyone identify the type of flatcars featured in this video? My guess is that they don't get used in interchange service due to there being no visible markings, but that also makes them difficult to research. I suppose my next question is what would be the closest approximation available in N? I foresee some kitbashing but I'd like to start with as much information as I can...

Intermountain HO SD40-2 upgrades

Like a lot of modelers, I've long been in search of the "perfect" SD40-2 - in my case, to model UP units using trackage rights to operate over my prototype.  Athearn's models have grown consistently better in detail and paint over the years, but in my experience, have never run as well as Atlas and Kato diesels.  Kato SD40-2s, on the other hand, can run great, but earlier versions require the factory pick-up system to be re-worked, and all fall short of the level and quality of detail of most current offerings.

Is it wrong to prefer things unweathered?

I see photos of beautifully detailed and weathered locomotives and cars in all scales. I think they are works of art. But when it comes to my own rolling stock and engines I prefer them pristine. I don't know why. I almost took to an Atlas C424 to weather it and make it look used. I couldn't do it. The gorgeous CPRail action red, the crisp whiteness of the pac-man, the dark black of the trucks and underframe....

Over-weighting: Trial

A recent post about over weighting caught my attention. After reading many of the comments I decided I'd like to start over-weighting my cars. So I thought I'd give it a try on a couple cars.

Since I'm free-lancing the N&W Pocahontas District I have a lot of open hoppers that need to be modified. I bought 25 lbs of #9 lead shot for use in adding weight and was shooting for 1 oz per inch for each car.

Removing factory details and paint without damage?

After years of collecting RTR HO rolling stock and locomotives from Athearn, Atlas, InterMountain, Exactrail and others, I am finally in a position to sit down and start detailing, painting and weathering the stuff.

Rivarossi 0-8-0 with RP25 flanges

I have an opportunity to buy a Rivarossi 0-8-0. It is a later production as it has RP25 flanges. What other improvements (if any) did they make to the locomotive? I am wondering about the motor especially. Hoping they ditched the old 3 pole one.

Is this loco correct for the time

Living in the UK, I don't have that feel for the time that many of you in the US have. I am building a little switching layout for my fictional Sunset and North Eastern. This is, supposedly, a link line between Hartford CT and Boston MA. The switcher will be an SW1500 (Broadway DCC sound) so this sets the time as around 1967 ish. I am getting rid of my Bachmann steam locos but am left with a New Haven Budd RDC (no use for that on this layout) and a B&M RS3.

My question is, would the RS3 be appropriate for this loco to appear with respect to the year?

BLI refurbished products - experiences?

On the BLI website has a "refurbished outlet store", with some decent deals.

What I am curious about is what would I be ending up with? - a scratch and dent model or bag of parts?

Thanks in advance,
