Shelf Couplers?
When did bottom shelf couplers become the standard on most (all?) rail equipment?
programming decoders
Good afternoon all, new here. Looking for help programing BLI Paragon2 steam.
Any one experienced a "run away" ? I have had two locomotives do it. My buddy has had the same problem with three. An acquaintance had one. Cannot say for the acquaintance on his experience.
My bud and I use the NCE Power Cab. I do our programing with Decoder Pro 3. I have contacted NCE, and was advised to turn off the answerback sound and turn off BEMF. BLI advised, set that.

Does anyone have a method for painting a flat car deck to look like weathered wood?

New Bachmann GG1 in HO
One of the big surprises I saw covered at the NTS was Bachmann bringing samples of an all new tooling HO scale GG1 to the show. Looking at the photos of the sample, this looks like a pretty nice model so far. They said it will also have a sound value Tsunami option as well as non-sound versions. The best part is that this will probably be available for less then $200 with sound, which is about half the price of the MTH (the MTH does have DCC operated pans though).

Looks like I'll have to rail fan Sherman Hill in a couple or so years.
GE or EMD??
I've read in several places that describe GE locomotives as "temperamental" and sometimes "inferior", is there actual grounds to that or is it just a case of "used to EMD's and reluctant to change"?
just curious,

Bowser PCC HO Trolley help needed!
My Bowser PCC HO Trolley ingested a bit of green scenery bush material into the powered truck gear set from the bottom. It has jammed the gears so that the motor will not move them. Because of the worm gear on the motor I can not move them forward or back by hand. I need to rotate the motor by hand to back them out of the gear set. This would require taking the body off the trolley.
Locomotive identification help needed
Since I came back to this hobby after a hiatus, I been paying attention to more train spotting. No comes the question. Is there a "cheat sheet" or something I can use easily on my phone to help me identify the locomotives. If I had something I could use to help me identify them easier, it would make this alot better. I don't want to carry a book around with pictures, or cards. My phone is with me all the time now and if I had an app or something I could refer to, that would make it better.
Athearn Genesis SDP45 Announced
Athearn announced this morning that their next Genesis locomotive will be the EMD SDP45. With a total of 52 locomotives produced, the SDP45 has been among the top requested locomotives by modelers to Athearn. The first run will consist of three versions -
What made a steam locomotive sound the way it did?
Here's one for a little prototype discussion. Hopefully this will lead those of us interested in sound to a better understanding of what our models should sound like,
What aspects of a design or operation gave a steam locomotive it's unique sound? Specifically, the exhaust or chuff. I'm not talking about the basics. I know why the chuff is there. What I'm asking is, what made one loco sound different than another?
