Older Version Athern axle gears p/n 60023
My club has several older Athearn diesels that we want to "rejuvenate". Some of them need to have their gears replaced (Ernst gears...really noisy). Trouble is..some of them have the old metal outside frames and we need to replace the Ernst axle gears with the original Athean axle gears p/n 60023. These 60023s are slightly larger in diameter than the newer 60024s and the hubs are wider...they are not interchangeable. I have tried my usual Athearn sources and they don't have these 60023ss. Does anyone know of a source?
Removal of DCC from Spectrum 45 ton switcher
I ordered a Bachmann/Spectrum 45 ton switcher engine in HO. My layout is not DCC nor is it straight DC. It is a home brewed PWM (250HZ). So the dual input (analog DC or DCC) decoder will have to go. I have other engines (some Spectrum) that were originally DCC but the modules were easily removed and replaced with a header that allows pure DC only operation. If I remember correctly the DC header may not be required as removal of the DCC module leaves the engine setup for DC only operation (???). But my old memory is not 100%, to say the least.
Almost got into 1:32 scale (3/8" scale)
I was digging around in a box of stored models and came a cross a project I must have started about 15 years ago. It's a representation of a Garford maintenance of way & fire fighting truck that rides on the rails, 3 foot gauge. The plans were published in the Narrow Gauge & Short Line Gazette in 1989. The drawing was done by Al Armatige. About 2009 Precision Scale Company did a brass model in On3.
Here's what the PSC model looked like.
Hopper Cars Inside
Ok, on another thread there is a VERY nice finish for a hopper car. The rest effect looks great.
The question is, how rusty did the inside of hoppers get. Note that I am modeling 1943.
Trying to find photos (preferably color) of hoppers insides is not easy.

freelance narrow gauge intermodal car--idea help, please?
I’m going to be building an intermodal car for 28’ containers—for an HOn30 train. I know that that’s pushing the envelope, but they did run some cars 8 feet wide back in the day. Can anyone toss some thoughts as to how it might look? I’m a bit stymied.
Obviously, the container must be as close to the track as practical for routine running. It’s the North Central’s first intermodal car, and only carries containers, not trailers.
N&W "skunk" GP-38's
Here is a finished scene on my ho scale layout, which is based loosely on the Winston-Salem southbound railway located in Winston-Salem, NC. The GP-38's in the photo are of the N&W experimental paint scheme "F8" or "skunk" done in 1982.

Cleaning paint off loco windows
My masking did not work 100 percent. I'm looking for suggestions for cleaning the paint of the windows. These are American Model Builders (AMB) laser cut windows for a SW-1.
All ideas welcome!
Bachmann Alco S4/ Broadway limited SW7 slow speed operation
I'm just getting back into the hobby after several years of inactivity. I like the looks and sound of both the S 4 and the SW 7. I've watched you tube videos of both units for sound. However, videos are sometimes jerky and jumpy.
How do both of these units perform in slow speed switching?
Any comments from owners of these models?
I'm planning on using an NCE procab DCC system for my small shelf switching layout.
Thanks
Pole pockets?
Does anyone have any suggestions on how to model the pole pockets that would be found at the corners of so many older locomotives and freight cars? At least two, if not more, of my planned locomotives will need them: The HOn30 Class A Climax that's almost done, and the HO scale model of Atlantic Shore Lines's wooden steeplecab electric.
Thanks!
Loco window glazing help
I'm in the process of refinishing and detailing a half-dozen old Athearn and Front Range Jeep shells. Since nothing's available RTR for what I want, I'm going old school and trying to do it myself.
I would appreciate any helpful suggestions on what to use for cab window glazing (not to mention headlight lenses). I have found some old Front Range parts on eBay, but nothing available for Athearn.
