Static grass without a static grass applicator
Looking for recommendations on what you guys use instead of static grass, to get the same look as static grass. I tried used some ready made grass and weed tufts and in the right place, they do the job. But I'm wanting to create some rarely used sidings that have grass and weeds growing in them. So they cant be too high or too stiff, since I do want to occasionally run a car or two on that siding.
Need some great ideas.
Suydam HO Barton Flats Lumber Mill Construction
I'm just breaking into the 'vintage Suydam HO Barton Mills Lumber Mill kit. I'd like to hear about the experience other modelers have had with this great kit. I'm particularly looking for information and techniques about finishing and weathering the heavy corrugated metal. What say you? Thanks for your help.

Railroad crossing signal distance from track
In the real world, what is the normal distance in feet is the railroad crossing signal (lighted or cross-buck) from the track? From the road? Is there a standard? I tried to goggle it up but couldn’t come up with an answer.
Thanks,
filling gaps on styrene structures
I am currently building a couple Walthers grain bin kits. In doing so, it is about impossible to not wind up with some small horizontal gaps (1/16" or less) in the seams between layers of rings. These could be filled in on the interior of the kit and will never be seen. On this type of a styrene structure kit what are some good options for filling these gaps?

Gluing paper roofing material to styrene...
Any suggestion on what type of glue to use to adhere paper shingles to a primed styrene surface? I don't want the whole panel coming off because the glue didn't stick the primed styrene.
Thanks,

Static grass ground probe for plaster scenery base
I posted this question as a reply to several older topics on static grass, but it occurred to me they might never even be seen by anyone for awhile. My question is on how to establish a good ground contact for the application of static grass when one has hard shell or some other plaster scenery base. All the videos I have seen apparently have a foam board base or some other soft material that one can easily inert a nail into as the ground contact. Can't very well pound a nail into a plaster scenery base without cracking the plaster or at least making a mess of plaster

RGB LED values to simulate daylight, dawn/dusk and night lighting
I'm using RGB LED strips to illuminate a small layout (8' x 18") from above. What values have you found to be best to represent different times of day?
Here are some that I'm using for testing. Values range from 0 (off) to 255** (full on). The numbers are in this format: Red, Green, Blue.
Cloudy-bright* daylight: 220, 255, 110
Dawn/dusk: 30, 48, 2
Darkest night: 0, 0, 10
Ballast
Choosing a "category" is difficult. So I chose two. Ballast. First of all. I'm still going to play trains until I'm totally satisfied that the track, locos, cars, wiring is all perfect. And then think about ballast. I am paranoid about water. Not so much the Elmers/water used to fixate the ballast. But if it's needed to be taken up. My track and roadbed are all laid with caulk. You know - the thin layer, just enough to hold. In 6 months, I've had no trouble with that. In fact, when I did need to pry up and relay, it was super easy. No mess. No fuss.
Weather/Water-proofing XPS Diorama
Hoping to hear from those with experience carving XPS foam forms/dioramas intended to withstand the elements, or even better, forms/dioramas specifically designed to support a working water feature. This is my first project using these materials so I have a lot to learn.
The project: A mountain-side diorama / planter for 2 of my bonsai specimens including an angled cascade ending in a small pond in the foreground. I have included a concept drawing for reference (PS - I'm no illustrator!).

Diamond Scale turntable & Korber roundhouse repairs
I have a turntable & roundhouse scene I purchased use from an estate sale long ago.
Turntable:
The turntable is a Diamond Scale 134 footer that may need a new pit built for it as the old one is very slightly warped, and the pit wall is cracked in a few places. I believe the pit wall is constructed of Hydrocal. How might someone go about filling in (bonding?) those cracks in the pit walls?
