Scenery and structures
In my topic below in which I said :lasesr” printing i meant “3-d” printing.
How fine can 3 d printing be?
Flouquil Substitute
I have a Sierra West 'Foss Landing' kit that is getting close to making it on my short list of projects to do. I've had it so long I don't even know how long I've had it. That got me looking at the instruction book and I see where they recommend using Floquil paints and Poly S paints. I am pretty sure they used Floquil due to the characteristics of the paint more than color.
How fine laser printing?
At the top of the cupola on the White River junction train station was a model of a steam engine. Modeled in HO it would be about 0.4 inch long. Can laser printers handle fine details - like the drivers, the cow catcher, the windows etc.
What do you think the dimensions are for these posts?
I keep talking myself into and out what size there posts are in this picture. Anyone want to make up my mind for me?
Thanks
Steve
Need Some Help with First Wood Kit Structure
I came to model railroading about 10 years ago, and I split my hobby time between model railroading, 2 other hobbies, and continuous renovations of our 170 year old house. I also live in an area where the nearest other modellers are a couple of hours away. So, I am not very long in the learning curve. But I do still have a steady hand and good patience.
White Metal Castings
Wondering if anyone has tried to re-melt a white metal cast part into a new casting. I have a kit from a mfg who is now out of business, where several of the windows were cast poorly and the frames are broken or there are significant losses of material, making the frame open or with a significant gap. So my thought is whether I could try to add some frames to "box-in" the window and add some metal. Or perhaps I can try to create a new casting by creating a mold with modelling clay.
Anyone used Light Weight drywall mud in place of hydrocal?
Has anyone used lightweight drywall mud in place of hydrocal for creating mountains and such? The hydrocal I have seen seems to be so expensive. I can get a bucket or a box of this drywall mud and mix it myself for half the cost. But since I can't find any references to it being used, I suspect the thought is leading me down a dangerous path I will regret.
Open to comments and your experiences.

Great source for window glazing
Yesterday I picked up some Gillette Fusion5 razor blade refills. Cutting open the package to release the blades, out fell a 2.25 x 5.25 piece of thin clear plastic that will be perfect for window glazing. Here is the package I bought:

Lowest prices for Faller
Faller makes what look like some great kits for kitbashing. I don't recall ever seeing any of these at a trainshow. There are lots and lots of small and breakable parts or parts that could be contaminated with globs of glue, so even if I had, they probably would not be worth much. So, where is the least expensive or maybe I should say best value to find some of these kits? I am planning on making them parts and pieces of other industries, so I hate to pay $50-$100 or more for these.
