Scenery and structures

Anyone have ideas on how to model a US Interstate Highway?
I was thinking of putting in a moderate-sized section of an Interstate Highway on my layout.
I have several questions:
- I am wondering if anyone out there has some tips or techniques they may want to share?
- I know that Summit Custom Cuts of Lake Charles, LA has started making sign gantries, but does anyone know of a way that you can either kitbash one or are there other manufacturers out there?
- Can it be done for low cost?

Grass applicator screen size
I am wondering if anyone has any experiences with using different sized screens on their
grass applicators. Most people have been using a standard aluminum screen. Does this size
work ok for all sizes or do you need the larger screen for the 6mm grass?
Your thoughts and experiences on this would be greatly appreciated.

Water tank sounds?
While reading some ICC valuation documents, I noticed something that got me thinking. The water tanks were typically filled in one of three ways - gravity, by steam siphon pump, or gasoline powered pump. That (mainly the gasoline engine at first) got me thinking about the sound these things would make.
In Defense of the Puff Ball
Recently here and elsewhere I have encounter a lot of folks attacking the poor puff ball. So I thought I would post this as a topic for folks to consider before bashing the puff ball. Because I know folks right now that would like to use them but frankly don't not because they have an issue with them but because they do not want to be criticized about them (I kid you not).
So here goes.
Some things to keep in mind about puff ball trees.
Hardshell question
Call me slow, but it just dawned on me that on my last layout update (N&W Pokey District, Sub 1 3/4) I should have asked a question that I'm wrestling with. I have some of the scenic forms up for my mountains. I'm including some of the pics from my recent layout blog again here so you can get an idea of what I'm talking about in this thread. The mountains are fairly large since this is not a shelf layout. The basic construction as you can see is cardboard strips, currently covered with 2" masking tape.
How to make concrete roads out of foamboard
I have been asked a few times to explain how I make my roads and such. I have waited until I needed a new road and today is the day.
Rooftop question-early rooftops?
I found the article on detailing rooftops inspirational. However, I don't see any info on detailing earlier roofs. A brick building in an old downtown today will have all sorts of things up there--but what about the same building in the 1880's? or the 1920's? Any info or places to poke about?
Hoses
I'm in the process of detailing the interior of a small HOn3 roundhouse. Two things I am having difficulty with.
The first is modeling coiled up air and water hoses to hang on columns. I have tried several types of wire and fishing line to create the coiled hoses, but nothing will hold shape or look correct.
