Modeling N scale track in pavement.
I don't model in N scale, but someone at another forum wanted to know how to model N scale track in pavement without the large gaps needed for flangeways. I had a piece of N scale flextrack lying around so I mulled the problem over and this is what I came up with.

chip dust for ballast?
Has anyone had any experience in using chip dust for ballast???
I am curious as it seems to be available at most gravel yards for fairly decent prices
Also, anyone know of a supplier of small quantities of coal?
thanks in advance,
What would an early Railroad Shop look like?
What would a railroad shop from the 1880's look like? I'm talking about the shops that rebuild and overhaul steam locomotives, not the roundhouses that do running repairs. I'm contemplating an older shop, still in use, either in the 1920's or modern--I'm still torn on what I'll be doing for my layout. (I'm contemplating a layout that can, in part, be used for either era with relatively little redressing.)

Passenger overpass
Finished at last..............well amost.......still need alot of detail and lighting...LOL

Monster Models & Laser Works
I recently purchased a Monster Models & Laser Works kit. It's their Starter Structures Part# HOSS01.
With this offer you could have a custom engraved Cornice as long as it fit with in the specs given by Jimmy. I figured why not. Here's the custom engraved cornice.

Paver sand
I bought a 50 pound bag of paver sand today. Sifting it through a fine sieve yields about 3:1 coarse to fines. Since I model in N scale I am more interested in the fine material. I went to Harbor Freight and bought one of their 2 drum rock tumblers. I filled each drum about half full and tossed in a couple of heavy bolts to try and create a sort of ball milling action. Here;s hoping it reduces the coarse material a bit finer. I'll check it in a couple of days and let you know if it worked. :)
Herbs as scenic material.
So I have a carousel of cooking herbs that has about 18 containers. I was going to dump them and use it for storage of various items but then it hit me. Maybe they could be used as scenic items.
Is there a down side to using herbs on the layout?
Thanks

Layout from Slovenia
Hi guys,
I have some photos of scenery that I'm modeling. I was asking questions about this and that before, and I have the result now. I was asking about a Moonshine Distillery, too. So you can see this as well.
Faller Roller Coaster kit?
I just bought the Faller Roller Coaster kit. Anyone here have any tips on building it?
I have read the direction downloaded off their site and it does not seem that bad (just lots of parts and pieces) except for the alignment of the track. Is that really hard and does it stay in aalignment once done?
It will be on a removable access plate on the layout (secured to plate). Will removal of that plate with the coaster on it screw up the coaster track alignment?.
Thanks,
LDBennett

Let's talk about ballast
I bought some Scenic Express #40 Blended ballast and it arrived today. It looks great, however it is signifacantly darker than I expected and may be too dark for the prototype area I am modeling. It looks good for a yard, but may be too dark for the mainline. Here is the ballast:
And here are the prototype photos:
