Dead Leaves? Glycerin?

In keeping with "there's nothing like wood for wood", and metal for metal, I ground and graded some dead leaves for dead leaves on a forest floor. They look great in the jar at the moment, but will they turn to dust in a couple of years? Can I spray some glycerin in the container, shake it up, and rely on that to 'freshen' them up? and make them usable?

Anyone heard of or tried using real dead leaves? Preservation methods?

Thanks

Making rocks

I thought I might share the way I "make" rocks.

Need some help/advice in building my river

Well I've finally gotten around to working on one of my modules. This one is of a bridge crossing over the trinity river north of downtown fort Worth. I found this picture that I am using as my reference.

Coal ship loading

Hello,

I'm planning a 0n30 layout with a narrow gauge RR at northern west coast. In addition to logging a small mine is operating. Does anyone have an idea or a link, how the loading of coal from cars to ship was done in the twenties?

Great Lakes Ore unloaders in the late 1800s

Ok, So here is a really cool photo unloading ore from a whaleback ship taken in 1901. I'm trying to figure out what the unloaders were called so I can find more info about them. These were built prior the "Brown unloaders and Huletts. Looks like a great scratch building project.

How have you handled mountains on YOUR shelf layout?

It seems a lot of modelers are going to shelf layouts rather than islands for both space reasons and realism. How are you guys handling the higher (and for that matter, lower) scenery on your shelf layouts? Obviously mountains take up space both horizontally and vertically. Being an Appalachian modeler, I personally devote about 1/3 of a 2' wide shelf to the mountains of the region (horizontally) and between 8 and 12" vertically.

And yes, pictures help and would be appreciated. :)

Standards for Road Signs and Markings

I came across a couple websites that have copies of the Manual on Uniform Traffic Control Devices for Streets and Highways.  This is a federal publication that explains about all there is to know about road signage and markings.  This manual has answered about every question I've wondered about regarding this subject . . sign types, sizes, colors, placement, etc.  And about everything you need to know about striping the road.

The primary site link is:

Painting Appalachian Mountain Scenery

I'm working on a backdrop for my layout. I'd like to paint some Appalachian forested mountain scenery with a little more detail for the close mountains than just some green with a rough tree horizon. I've searched the web looking for resources on how to paint such a scene with acrylic paint, but am coming up empty. Anyone have any resources, tips, or painting instructions that might help me? Thanks!

louvred vents on loco shed

I am planning on scratch building the mallet house, which was in Thurmond WA. It had louvred vents along the top of the roof, I don't really want to scratch build these unless I have to. Does anyone know where I can get them from already made up.

Thanks

Shingle Siding

I want to do a model of my home when I was young that used the 12 x 24 asbestos shingles as siding. Anybody have an idea as to how to do this. I have found nothing so far commercially available.  I am about to the point of photographing existing siding on some buildings and spending some time in photoshop to create my own paper siding.

Thanks- PKS
