Help using one engine with Cab04P/Powercab

I’m pretty new to DCC – and while I like the NCE system, I’m not particularly fond of the large hammerhead handheld controller and the long flat cable that must be used.  I want to use a Cab04p along with my Powercab.  I like the rotary knob and compactness of the 04 engineer cab.

Problem is I currently use one engine (Athearn MP15AC).  I was planning to tuck the Powercab and PCP under the layout and install a UTP where the PCP was to allow simple disconnecting of the 04p when not in use.

Questions about Precision Scale O Scale 3 Point Track Gauges

For anyone that has Precision Scale Company catalogs that have O Scale Track Tools, I would like to know if the 3 point Track Gauges for O Scale Standard and On3 Narrow Gauge are similar to the HO Scale 3 point track gauges Micro Engineering makes.  I would like to know before ordering them from the manufacturer.  I asked about them directly and was told to look at their catalog, which I don't feel like wasting money on just to look up this one group of tools.

Thanks!

Track going across a swing bridge....

I have made the cuts to my track going across the swing bridge. Should I also install guard rails in the location of the cuts? Or wait to see if it is a problem? At this point the trains track just fine, but I am looking for the opinion of others.

thanks for your time.

Cork Roadbed

Has anyone heard anything about when Midwest's cork roadbed will be available? I had ordered some months ago, but the emails I keep getting from the vendor just tell me it is on back order.

TCS FL4 for Athearn Bombardier Cab Car

Hey Guys,

Decided to light all my Athearn cars and put decoders in the cab cars for ditch lights and control of directional marker and headlights.  I was advised the TCS FL4 would have the required functions to do this.  Please note, I am still electrically a novice here.

Having only installed one TCS hardwire decoder before I was a little leary, but dove in.

So far I have installed the interior lights and capacitor and they work fine.  (LED strip lights).

athern 2-6-0

Caboose hobbies is selling athern 2-6-0s for a good price. Is this a good candidate for dcc? what decoder would fit? Any tutorials about install? Thanks

Lenz - NCE Compatability

Hello Everyone,

I'm using a Lenz Digital system which I would like to set up with a computer interface so I can use Decoder Pro.  Lenz does make an interface but it's best part of $300 and apparently doesn't work well with Windows 7!  Does anyone know if the NCE interface (@$40) will/does work with the Lenz systems?

Many thanks in advance,

Soldering Station

Hi

I am after suggestions on buying a soldering station.  I have used various size soldering irons in the past but I would prefer an adjustable station.  Any suggestions on brand, heat range, wattage, etc?  It would be used for (in the future) surface mounts (presumably needing a lower heat setting) up to  soldering PCB ties to rail.  I am after as much information as I can get before deciding on the type to buy.

resitors for LED's

Q for Bruce: In your June article on pp16 you mentioned using a resistor on the white and yellow leads. I wonder if you couldn't just use one resistor on the combined blue lead? I realize they don't cost much, but anywhere you can save a penny, eh? John Colley, Port Townsend, WA
