Track and electrical/DCC

Slow down and spped up

For Christmas I built the World Greatest Hobby layout with Kato track for my Nephews. During later stages in construction I thought I'd break in some of my own locomotives that had never been out ot their boxes. In doing so I observed some peculiar symptoms. After cleaning and lubricating some NOS Proto P2K engines I noticed that there were two spots on the layout where engines would slow then resume their previous speed. Interestingly enough they acted-up close to the two power feeds located 180 apart.

4 UP5's daisy chained to a UR91 - does it work

I've hooked up - daisy chained - my 4 UP5's around the layout and hooked them up to my UR91.  I know the UP5's work as lights come on and train runs.  But I also hooked up the single wire that feeds some power so throttles with batteries won't drain and lose power prematurely.

How do I know the wire hooked up to save throttle battery power works.  The obvious answer is to see how fast a throttle battery drains when left hooked up to the UP5 and the CS put in sleep mode.  But is there another way to test to see if the wire is working?

Silver solder - temp setting?

I have my work station set for 750 F for my iron, does it need to be higher for silver solder; my station goes up to 850 F.

A Talking Defect Detector - my latest Arduino Project

Good day - My wife and I have traveled across the country on Amtrak a number of times and I always take along a scanner to monitor the train's radio communications.  The defect detector reports were always of interest.

This inspired me to try my hand at creating one for model railroads.  After a few weeks of work  I finally have it (mostly) working and thought it might be of interest to some of you.

Electrical mystery

The strangest thing is happening on my track. My loco slightly shudders/hesitates intermittently when heading south on my layout at higher speeds, but not north bound. If I turn the loco around facing the other way, it still hesitates heading south, but not northbound. So It seems there is nothing wrong with the loco.

My next test will be to reverse the lead wires to the track to see if it changes the shuddering to the north bound direction... will try this tomorrow.

Loksound Select Direct .. Help please

I am attempting to fit a keep alive Capacitor to a loco fitted with one of these boards. Note that this is the one size fits all version as per this photo

Proper orientation of Atlas 100 FlexTrack on curve

Is there a proper orientation to lay Atlas Code 100 FlexTrack on a curve?  Should the rail with "separated" (i.e., flex) ties be positioned on the inside or outside of the curve?  Does it make a difference as to track stability?

Bachmann dcc turnouts

I have a Bachmann starter set equipped with the Dynamis controller and a dcc turnout. I cannot get this turnout to respond or program in the accessory position. I have decided that these things are not worth the effort and I will go with remote and manual turnouts. Does anyone have any success with dcc turnouts?
