Track and electrical/DCC

While I am busy trying to burn her down...

Seriously,

I know this is not exactly track electrical, but I am using the infamous LED light strips found on eBay to light my staging yard. My staging yard is around 22 feet long and right now, one strip of lights seems to do just fine to light it up.

It works fairly well, but I left it connected to the track power output on an MRC power pack.   After a while, the overload light came on and the lights shut off.

Ok is this a Capacitor Discharge device ???

Gang,

Another one of my finds...  I think this is a capacitor discharge circuit for twin coil switch machines. Can anyone verify this before I defibrillate (shock) myself?

I think the power in is fairly clear, being red and black. Of course, I have no idea which is positive and which is negative. There are two white wires, which I assume are outputs.

POB and signaling

Let's assume you have a Power On Board (POB) loco that has batteries and is completely isolated -- it doesn't trickle charge and it doesn't need any rail power ever. It's the future and it does wireless charging of the battery.

Let's also assume you have decided like I have that power on the rails is the most realistic way to do signaling. With resistance wheelsets on your rolling stock, even one car left sitting in a siding somewhere will trigger the signals just like the prototype.

NCE Procab Help to Hook up Magna Force Power Supply

I have a NCE Procab and a Magna Force power supply from DCC Specialties.

It has three wires to hook up to my NCE system. Can anyone show me how these hook up?

Bruce Petrarca Articles Capacitors and RailPro.

Bruce Petrarca has an article in October 2017 MRH regarding "RailPro makes things easy". Also Bruce wrote an article past August 2017 in MRH regarding capacitors i.e. keepalive type systems.

Question? Will the same capacitor system (Keep-alive, Current keeper etc) he details in August issue work just the same in a straignt DC powered layout and/or with the RailPro power supply.

Will capacitors (Keep-Alive etc.) be needed with RailPro?

Digitrax BDL 168 problems

I have a Digitrax BDL168 wired up to 16 blocks on my double track layout set up to a JMRI panel. Running Digitrax Command station and Loconet. If I Run one train the track occupancy shows as per expected following the train around the layout but if I introduce a second or a 3rd train running on a different track or block the occupancy sometimes shows or doesnt but never shows all the trains running.. Im quite puzzelled by this behaviour.

Re-motoring Proto 2000 Diesels

We have discussed re-motoring Blue Box locos with Kato motors, but has anyone had occasion to perform a motor transplant on a Walthers P2K E unit (original Life Like design)? My A-B-A bodies were custom painted and significant details were added but they  will not transplant into the superior new production E frames with their improved motor and trucks. So, I am thinking a new Kato motor.

At Wit's End-Shell Removal on Athearn RTR SD40-2???

I am trying to install a decoder in a DCC-ready late production SD40-2 Athearn RTR model. I have disassembled numerous locomotives but this one has me stumped. I have to say the documentation that came with the model is dreadful at best. I have removed the coupler pockets but the shell is still stubbornly stuck to the frame. I am almost sure there are other screws to remove (I know this is true of the GP40X model as I just installed a sound decoder in one of them) but the screws that exist in real life are not shown on the parts drawing.

Is dead rail dead?

I ran across this today:

http://www.on30guy.com/2017/10/23/tam-valley-depot-drops-dead-rail/

I have no real interest in dead rail, I don't feel that battery technology is any where near where it needs to be for this to work reliably. Seems it just wasn't catching on.

Digitrax UP-5 panel connections

I am finally hooking up some UP-5 panels and the UR-92 radio. I have separate power supplies (PS-14) for the UR-92 and the UP-5 panels. I am going to solder the common on all the panels and connect the track voltage wires.
