Benchwork and roadbed

Homabed vs. Flexxbed--preferences, admonitions, etc.

Not being in a position to work cut up 4x8 sheets of homasote on my own, I'm looking at pre-cut options for my roadbed.  Does anyone have experience with either or both California Roadbed's Homabed and Hobby Innovations' Flexxbed?  I'm wondering about the pros/cons of each and which seems easier to work with.

Closed Cell Foam Roadbed?

I'm trying to decide the best material for roadbed to get a reasonable degree of sound deadening.

At the moment I am considering:

  • Traditional cork
  • Closed Cell foam (3mm or 5mm)

Does anyone have any first hand experience of using Closed Cell foam or is there a better alternative?

Thanks

A Question About Benchwork

Need a little advice!  Going to build a small 4x8 train table for my grandson!  I am thinking about using 2x4s for the framing?  Also 3/4 inch plywood or 1/2 inch maybe? I understand most prefer to use the 3/4 inch plywood, it just seems so heavy but I have read where the 1/2 inch may warp??  Any suggestions would be appreciated!

Two Levels on Open Grid benchwork

Hi....I'm in the process of building my first ever layout...I'll be starting benchwork soon and the plan call for a multi level benchwork.

I can't drill on the walls and the layout is from 31" to 35" deep...also I must be able to take it apart as much easily as it can be if it's needed

how can i design/build a two level on opengrid?

maybe some good reference picture will help...I'm not much of wood working, as much newbies :)

Connecting Styrofoam to Traditional subroadbed.

Due to recent health issues, it has become painfully obvious that I won't be manhandling 4x8 sheets of 1/2 inch MDF (or portions thereof) down into my basement anymore. So, I've decided to finish my layout using 2 inch Styrofoam for the remainder of my subroadbed - which is mainly just the main yard and staging yards.

I'm looking for suggestions on the best way to connect the new Styrofoam subroadbed to the current 1/2 inch MDF.

Installing toggles in the fascia?

The other day at was at my local Lowes. I picked up some material for a fascia. This is 6" wide and 4' long. It is made from aspen wood and has very nice grain to it. It is 1/4 thick. I plan on using a clear satin finish to it. My problem is toggle switches. The ones I have do not have a long enough mounting shaft.I would like to use the ones I have instead of new. A little search around the web showed lots of switches but no info on the length of the shaft. I could use a short piece of thin masonite for mounting but I really like the look of the aspen wood.

Best Way to Clean Large Quantity of Track

Hey guys, today I'm going to take on the task of cleaning every last piece of sectional and flex track I have before I buy roadbed and start laying it down. Lots of it is ten years old or more and very dusty. Some of the flex track pieces are badly corroded. What is the best way to clean these track pieces quickly and with a large quantity?

It is mostly Atlas code 100 track - is it dishwasher safe by any chance?

Garage layout plan needs a bridge.

I have one side of the garage bench work complete. I need ideas on what to use as a "mainline run" spanning the width of my garage door (11') to the other half of the layout.

Plywood for Risers

I will soon be needing plywood for riser decking.   I'm definitely going with 1/2" birch plywood but after visiting my local Home Depot I noticed several types: one being a veneer smooth birch for about $38 - 4x8 sheet.   Should I avoid the "smooth veneer top" go with the best "cabinet grade" I can get ?
