Benchwork and roadbed

Sufficient support for two inch foamboard in HO scale..... 16 or 32 inch spacing?
Well, the move to the retirement house (notice I said HOUSE, not HOME... the "home" is hopefully a few years down the road...!) in coastal NC is done, and I'm beginning to see the light at the end of the unpacking and modifications to the place here and there. The model railroad is calling.

Multi-Deck Sectional Benchwork with Grades
Any examples out there of free standing multi-deck sectional benchwork (multi-deck sections that can be moved every couple of years that aren't secured to walls)?
Any examples of grades across sections and how the alignment is maintained?

N Scale High Wall Layout Materials
Hello all,
Would like to build an around the living room single or double track narrow shelf layout using 15" radius curves. Will be very simple. Located above the windows at approximately 7'. Just track for display running only. Want to keep the shelf depth to a minimum.

Installing a Bridge
I'm coming up on a first in my layout construction: installation of the first bridge. I'll be installing a Central Valley 72' plate girder bridge and I've got a few questions about the installation.
Do you normally secure the bridge to the abutments or let it "float" beneath the track (simply sitting on the abutments with the track itself holding it in place).

Quiet track--Ground foam as ballast?
I know the subject of building quiet track has been knocked around a lot over the years but I've never seen any discussion of the feasibility of using ground foam rubber (if you could find the right colors) as ballast. Would this work with a matte medium adhesive to build track with a less rigid (and hopefully quieter) ballast shell? Would some other form of rubber (or any other soft material you can think of) be a better substitute (not sure if the cell structure of foam would be too difficult to glue down even using "wet" adhesive)? Just trying to think of
Multi-Level
Has anyone done a multi level layout where there was no connections between the levels where you might have freight operations on one level and passenger operations on another. Due to my room size I was thinking about doing something like.
What is the usual distance between levels if you have done something like that?
Thanks for any ideas.

Making Roadbed
I had just started working on my new layout, the last time I had built a layout was about fifteen years ago. This time, like most of use I had a little less to work with to build it. I have gotten myself back into scratch building as much as possible. So when it came to my roadbed I started researching what I wanted to use, foam or cork? Foam seemed too soft and springy, but it looked more affordable then cork. My first step was where do I find cork sheets. Researching on the web I had found out I need to look for a roll of cork underlayment for flooring.
New Woodland Scenics foam cutter stopped heating
I plugged it in for the first time and it worked perfectly for 30 seconds...and then stopped heating. The wire was tight on the bows; power is flowing to the cutter; but it's no longer heating up. Any suggestions for getting it to work or should I return it to the store?
Torsional rigidity of benchwork sectional /domino style
The first sections/dominos I ever built was a '4'x8 frame made of '1x"3 pine, with crossmembers "12 OC, set up on a table or on it own legs. I was never satisfied with it, as it would twist/flex along its longitudinal axis, ever after adding crossmembers to the crossmembers. I finally saw the light about 4x8 had to take it down for basement finishing reason but decided to rebuild into two '2x'8 with crossmembers "12 OC.
Lowering the level of a siding?
I believe that sidings (and yards) on the prototype were often slightly lower than the main line in order to prevent cars from running away onto the main line. I have also read that emulating this on a model layout enhances the realism and helps to make the siding track look different from the mainline (in addition to other techniques such as using lower profile rail and larger spacing between ties).
I have a couple of questions that someone out there might help answer:
