Benchwork and roadbed

Flex Seal Roadbed

Has anyone considered using Flex Seal to make roadbed? The stuff costs $90/gallon plus $10 S&H. I have no idea how far a gallon would go. It could probably be poured into a simple mold to whatever thickness desired. Thus a modeler could make different thicknesses to suit mainline, sidings, and spurs. Just an idea. Maybe bright, maybe not.

Rapido Noise Killer Roadbed or Flexxbed (Vinylbed)

Hello all,

I am considering both for sound insulation using HO Kato Unitrack for subroadbed on a pine shelving layout.

Anyone use either and what are your thoughts/experiences/recommendations?

Thanks much!

Anyone tried this?

Has anyone tried the modular system that "locks" in place offered by the company in Texas? Can't recall the name of the outfit. And, has the system worked for you? Advantages, disadvantages?

Covering a window...

Those of you that follow my build thread may remember my backdrop suddenly kind of wrinkling up as if it had gotten wet on the side against the wall. I had other things going on, so I pretty much ignored it. But, as construction has come to a temporary halt while tensions escalate and negotiations continue on the border, I took a closer look. As I suspected, the portion of the backdrop that is damaged is directly in front of a glass block window.

Supporting the backdrop masonite sheets

I am installing the 2x4 and 2x2 verticals to attach the masonite sheets to for my backdrops. This backdrop wall rises 30 inches above the track height. Its on the peninsula so both sides will get masonite. I did a search and most people use drywall screws to attach the masonite to the 2x lumber. I am thinking maybe I want to use construction adhesive. Possibly use screws in the field where clamping is difficult and clamping it top and bottom.

Run Like a Dream

As an early sign up to all three of JoeF's new books I was pleased to get access to the first issue (Trackwork) the other day.  I also attempted to gain access to the RLAD website but I am afraid the sign in process is somewhat user unfriendly and has defeated me.

I have a question about the ebook.  I have downloaded a PDF copy to my desktop computer but would also like to get one for my IPad bookshelf.  Could the publishers please advise methods for gaining access to alternate versions.

Drawing lines on Woodland Scenics Track-Bed super sheets

I've laid WS super sheets in the yard for my new shelf layout.  I needed to mark lines on the track bed for location marks for turnouts but every pencil crayon, marker, pen, etc. I tried wouldn't leave a visible line or mark.  Very frustrating!  So I went into Michaels with a piece of track bed and drew on it with a variety of markers recommended by an associate.  What worked like a charm is a Recollections Signature Opaque Marker in Snow (white).

Has anyone researched alternatives to extruded polystyrene or XPS

I am in the early phase of ultra light sectional layout construction, and was planning to use square aluminum tubing framing, extruded polystyrene (XPS) risers & sub-roadbed, cork roadbed, and Bragdon resin based scenery to support the roadbed.

Light weight layout sections are a must because of back issues.

After reading Joe Fugate's recent article in Sep MRH (pg 143), I am looking for alternatives to big box store XPS sheets.

Has anyone researched dimensionally stable foam sheets?

Thanks,

GREEN ballast

I was out west and I found what I thought was some excellent tan/gray ballast. So I sifted 8 gallon containers of the stuff. When I went to use it on my layout my operators commented on the "pretty" green ballast. Ug! It is not the lighting or the glue that I use it is just green--I guess I am more colorblind that I thought.

Does anyone know of a branchline/mainline that uses ballast that has a green tint to it? (Like Pink Lady).

I would hate to dispose of all the green ballast I have, but I do not wish to have a goofy looking layout with green ballast.
