Benchwork and roadbed

Shelf layout with helix question

Hey guys I have been contemplating doing a module layout but in the form of shelves.  The layout will be in a "U" shape with 2 main lines on each shelf.  I want to have one mainline going one way and the other going the opposite.  When it gets to the end of the shelf, one side will have a loop to go down the other main.  On the other side is my question er problem LOL.

Roadbed or no roadbed?

I'm to the point of laying roadbed and track on the main level of my layout.

Hardboard backdrop - separate primer or self-priming paint?

I will be painting my backdrop soon. It's tempered hardboard with taped and mudded joints. My assumption has been that I would first prime the hardboard with something like Kilz white primer and then paint my sky over that. As I have been looking at paint products at Home Depot, I see there are products such as the Behr Premium Plus line that has a primer built into the formula. Do those integrated paints work well or am I better off using the primer first?

Roadbed dilemma.

I have seen many old layouts that use Homasote for roadbed and it does great. Our club also has 45 year old homasote and tracks have stayed in place well. Our issue is humidity in the bacement. one day the trains run flawless. the next day you can see where they have slightly moved or pushed rails around. I see some spots where the hand laid spikes have lost grip and the rails are not tight to the ties. Recent track laying in the last 5 years was done with peco flex track and we simply glue the track down to the homasote, this has shown to be very good to keep the track in place.

Shelf onstruction

Anybody build a shelf layout with a 36 in turnaround,  a 6 ft shelf.  Is it possible without a post support?

It's only been 3 years !!!

Well,

I finally did it, Phase I of the benchwork is up! I have only lived in this house for 3 years! I'm fairly sure it was the basement flooding and subsequent wall drying as well as baseboard and carpet replacement that dictated me cleaning up my mess. It also helped to find a supplier of steel who sells "drops"in nice condition. BUT... it's started !

Layout planning—physical constraints and needed benchwork

I am finally making serious plans to actually start building a small layout.  It will be a HO scale 1920’s small switching layout.  The physical constraints are as follows:

It will be a maximum of 2 x 6, with a tail track able to be added at the left side when the layout is in use.  It must be lightweight and moderately easy to move.  It will be in 2 pieces, either 2 x 3 or a 2 x 4 and a 2 x 2.

It will be against a wall, and the removable tail track will sneak behind the desktop computer

Helix diameter

I know a helix discussion is old to some folks.  I have been doing research I have a 11.5 x 11.5 room for my layout and I want staging underneath.  What is the smallest diameter one has sucessfully been done.  I will have no more than 10-12 car trains with 2 locomotives per train.  My layout will have to make use of a duckunder so I cannot just ease down that way.  Any thoughts ?
