Benchwork and roadbed
Foamcore benchwork - using foamcore beams
I recently joined the forums and became an MRH subscriber. I posted a couple photos of my small Maine-themed HO layout (in progress) in the Small Layouts thread.
My benchwork - mainly a flat tabletop for now, but with some lowered cut-outs, and hills that will be added in the future - is made mostly of foamcore. This is the thin 3/16" stuff, used for poster backing and such.
I made "box beams" out of foamcore, assembled them into a rectangular frame, then glued a foamcore skin to that.

Am I forgetting anything before glue???
Hey guys,
I just got my 2inch foam top cut and ready for glue, I have my bus wire strung under the layout down the middle. I'm just wondering if I'm missing anything before I glue the foam to the benchwork..
I have my turnouts wired with feeders and have my track plan. Just wanted to see what you guys have to say before I pull the trigger and glue the foam.
Appreiciate the responses, this website has been awesome in helping with my build

Best way to cut foam- apartment living.
I live in an apartment and I’m building a shelf layout n spare room. I want to lay pink foam on top of the benchwork and have been looking for the best way to cut it. Again I’m in an apartment so only have a small back deck to use for my cutting. I’ve been looking at hot knives but the reviews on Amazon for the ones that cost around 30 bucks aren’t that great. Granted most probably aren’t using them for cutting foam for their railroad but regardless can you guys tell me some ways that work well.
Question about the use of extruded foam board insulation on benchwork
I've been following posts regarding the use of XPS foam on layouts. Some of the comments mentioned that the material releases small amounts of gas and that it shrinks somewhat. Is this a long term issue or does it only occur shortly after it's made? The Owens Corning web site mentions that their product has a linear shrinkage value of 2% max. That translates to 1.92" over the 8' span. Has anyone experienced anything like this?
Foam Noise, Again
Perhaps beating a nearly or hopefully dead horse, would one inch pink foam supported by open grid benchwork without any other plywood/hardboard or similar support under it and with either cork or homasote roadbed affixed to the one inch pink foam with Matte Medium or similar "soft" adhesive be "quiet" or would the dreaded "foam drum" or similar noise still be present?

Plastic rail in HO scale?
Hi,
I am looking for plastic rails in HO scale but so far all the searches yield only the usual tracks and other accidental results. Do you know if such a thing exists at least? And maybe of a brand / model / search keyword that could give me that?
Scratchbuilding roadbed..never had the patience.
I searched this forum for this video and did not find it.... so I hope its not redundant. This is not mine. Just something I found to be interesting.
Top notch attention to detail and craftsmanship. I could never do this.
Noise and roadbed question
As I am getting ready to start construction on my newest layout, the May Valley Railroad, I was contemplating roadbed material vs noise. My plan is to use 2" foam board over a light wood frame. But I have heard others in the past complain about the noise from this type of construction. I have been told that it is kind of like a drum radiating noise from the trains. All of that said I was wondering if anyone has used Homosote for roadbed on top of a foam board top..... and if so does it help with the noise?

Sliding Wye Extension
I ended up with a bit of a dilemma when laying out the Wye on the final section of my HOn3 PC&N Ry. In order to have the Wye fit and leave enough room for at least one engine and car at the far end, I would have to tighten up the Wye radius to 18". I really wanted to keep my 22" minimum radius but that meant the Wye wouldn't even have enough room for a single engine at the far end.
