Diesel locos

A cruel sense of humor.

Just as I have finished painting and detailing a GP35 as CP 5023, Atlas announces CP 5023 and 5024 in their new catalog. I think the train gods must really, really be killing themselves laughing at me.

Still, it was neat to try my hand at painting, detailing and decaling but I could have been doing the OBRY engine instead!

GP38-2 drives - Athearn Genesis vs. Atlas

I'm thinking of adding some Athearn Genesis GP38-2s to the fleet, but would like to know how the drive quality compares with the Atlas GP38/GP38-2 (and Kato SD38-2s, for that matter), and how well the two can be made to MU with DCC. Any input would be appreciated.

Info needed on CPR, FP7As

In the picture in this link http://trainweb.org/galt-stn/cproster/locomotive/1400s/cp1416.htm can someone tell me what the quarter circle extensions are on each side of the diesel's roof are called and what purpose did they serve?

Athearn Diesels - Noisy!!! SOLVED

I have two of these particular Athearn diesels, bought in the mid 1980's and stored for some years. Yes, I know, the original metal used for electrical connections has rusted, a bit.  However, that's not the issue.  The issue is noise.

Broadway Limited Blueline Loco Question

I recently purchased a old but new in box Blueline loco. The sound works great, but I can't get it to move. With the DC plug in it hums like any other DC loco. I put in a Digitrax decoder to see if that made any difference. All to no avail. So does anyone with experience with a Blueline have any ideas???

southern Pacific loco marks

I have a sp gp9 locomotive with a diamond above the numbers on the side which I read indicates the locomotive has a spark retarder installed. I've seen other markings on my other locomotives such as a square. is there any where I can find what these markings mean? What do they indicate?

Athearn RTR!

I have recently purchased two SW1500 RTR switchers, they are now DCC and run great (my first Athearn purchase).

There are a few opinions about the SW1000/1500's having different motors from the other RTR locos. I was considering a SD40-2 RTR dcc ready but I am reading a lot about Ready to REMOTOR or Rebuild, are they noisy?

However the guy that owns the shop reckons they have the same motor as the sw1000/1500?
