Diesel locos
Athearn - Split Gear Fix that works, completed
On Friday evening, 06 Dec. 2013, I attended the set-up of a local train show. I would love to have gone to the actual show on Saturday, 07 Dec, however, I had to work that day. I bought an Athearn (GP-7 / GP-9) diesel that evening. Circumstances were such that I could not test run it. When I, finally, got it home, and ran it on my layout, it sounded more like a distressed, ready to die steam loco, rather than a diesel.
Need a part for Fleischman F7A
I have a used Fleischman F7A diesel that I am hoping to repair. The motor itself, if removed from the loco and powered, spins very freely. The problem is, there is a coupling missing between the motor and the rest of the drive train on one end. I was thinking perhaps there is a way I could fabricate a part, but if I can find a supplier and buy one that might be preferable.
Here are pictures to describe what I am looking at. First, here is the loco still assembled in case anyone recognizes it that way:
Cracked Gears on Lionel HO UP Turbine?
I have an HO Lionel Veranda Turbine that has at most 30 minutes of run time on it. I bought it new, shortly after they came out and after a bit of running on my old layout, I moved and it has been stored in a closet inside the house ever since.
I recently took it out to run and it had the dreaded click and bump from each wheel rotation that I have found so often in P2K GP 7/9's. However, with the Turbine it only happens when running FWD. I have been told that NWSL make a replacement gear #2462-6 12T but I can't get the axles out!
Speaker Installation
I read Bruce's article and watched his video on speaker installation, but have a question. How much distortion is there thru a plastic shell of a locomotive? I am putting sound into some of our club engines (Kato, P2K, Athearn RTR and some blue boxes). Was curious about this since mounting speaker to top rear of shell would be the easiest to do for some of these engines.

Grab iron templates
Are there any mounting templates out there for mounting the grab irons on Bachmann GP7/9, RS-3, or S2/S4?
I've considered getting some of these locomotives but having to guess-the-grab placement is a bit of a deterent.
Thanks in advance, Skoti.
Need ID of GP-7 manufacturer, please.
I found this GP-7 at a train show on the weekend. Did some work on it - running fine. (now) I'll explain, later.
There is nothing tagged, stamped nor labeled on it, anywhere, that tells me who the manufacturer was.
Can anyone tell me who the manufacturer was, please ?
Thanks,
G.T.
