The Iowa Interstate's West End

I'm modeling the west end of Iowa Interstate's Subdivision 4 in May 2005 - the western-most 49 miles of the railroad from Atlantic to Council Bluffs, IA - and I thought I'd start a blog here to document the process, since this and the Yahoo Proto-Layouts list seem to be where I'm spending most of my on-line time these days.  This is the first layout I've ever gotten much past the benchwork stage, so pretty much every step involves me asking a lot of questions and learning a lot.

And now for something completely different...

While we have some nice days left this summer, I wanted to get some more done on the FreeMoN module.  Plus the next meet is fast approaching in October, and it will be here before we know it.  I took advantage of it tonight after work and dragged the modules out onto the sawhorses in the back yard.  I looked at a couple of track weathering articles (MRH article) and carted the airhose, airbrush and equipment out there too.  I had been planning on this for awhile, and picked up some Pollyscale rust at th

Signaling for DCC

How do you restart a DCC loco which has stopped at a signal without doing it manually? I think I read somewhere about switching sig. track to DC currant while train is stopped then back to DCC power when signal turns green. Can somebody please assist. If DC currant is applied then at what voltage?

Need a new tip for a 30+ year old Weller WTCPL

My trusty Weller WTCPL soldering station continues to soldier (or solder?) forward. However, my heavy-duty spade tip for it has terminal cancer is not much longer for this world.

A search of Digi-key and Allied shows no tip available for this model. Ugh.

Does anyone know where I could find tips for "antique" controlled heat soldering stations?

I'd hate to have to buy a new soldering station because I can't get tips for the old one!

JL&T Railroad Blog - Building a Grade Crossing using styrene sheet...

Well over the last two days I decided to tackle a concrete grade crossing that forms part of the scenery on the L&T.  This grade crossing is formed in a crossover formed by two #6 PECO turnouts.  I have used styrene with great success with the JL&T module and decided to use again for this grade crossing.

Details follow in the next post.
