May '13 - comment on stripwood staining fixture
I looked at this article with great interest, being that I'll be handlaying HO track on one or more modules (code 70). The method sounded really good until Mr. Napper said he had to stain the ends of the ties once they were cut. That was a real turn-off for me. It's too much work.
I thought I'd share my method, not that I think it's better or anything, but it's what I've found is cheap and works for me. Caveat: I have tried this only on balsa ties. I have not yet tried it on basswood. I have also not read extensively on staining methods for ties.
Painting Wheelset
I hate cleaning paint off of wheel treads after they're weathered. Instead of cleaning the paint off with a solvent, I tried masking them this time. Just curious, what's the easiest method you've come up with for making sure wheel treads are paint-free when the car is ready for the layout?

Hanging By a Thread
Worked on some signs today. While assembling the liquor store sign I ran into trouble getting both sides hung. So as an experiment I left it that way. Not sure if I like it yet or not. I want a seedy rundown neighborhood not an abandoned one. I want to avoid making a caricature out of this model.
Till next time

BLUE SKY
Road trip to Rocky Ops this past weekend to run trains. Three videos to follow in coming weeks. But to end the discussion about sky please note why I say I have a Blue Sky railroad. This should save you a lot of time painting your Sky. Light at the bottom and dark at the top. This makes it very Simple.
My first Shapeways--ordered
I just ordered 2 shapeways products for my next projects. There's an HOn30 cab that's going to be part of a freelanced locomotive built on a Kato 11-107 chassis (http://www.shapeways.com/model/366117/fge-cab-hon30.html?materialId=61&l...) and a pair of HOn30 passenger trucks. Cornhill & Atherton - Poor Man’s Power Districts
Nothing innovative here – just a point of view and approach that may be of interest to some.
When I built my chainsaw I initially used DC and then converted to DCC to make objective comparisons. No surprise that DCC won the contest, but I was introduced to the dubious pleasure of obscure short circuit sleuthing.
One of the strangest was an intermittent short related to poor manufacturing tolerances on the built in switch of a solenoid turnout motor.
TEAR DOWN #3
GETTING IT DONE...I STARTED THIS ABOUT 6AM YESTERDAY MORNING I HAVE BEEN WORKING ON IT FOR ABOUT 4 HOURS UP TO THIS POINT. STILL HAVE A BUNCH MORE TO DO & I NEED TO GET IT DONE BY TOMORROW NIGHT. I AM GOING IN FOR MINOR HAND SURGERY ON TUESDAY
THE 2 PAINT SWATCHES I SHOWED AT THE OPEN NING OF THIS VID CAN BE FOUND AT LOWES. IT'S THEIR "VALSPAR BRAND" I THINK THAT THE TEXTURE IS GOING TO BE THE RIGHT SIZE FOR MY "N" SCALE STRUCTURES TO BE ADDED TO THE EXISTING WALLS TO CREATE A STUCCO EFFECT. I TOOK A BUNCH OF EACH COLOR.
