Athearn diesel locomotive handrails - What to do?

I have an Athearn RTR SW1500, and its handrails are pretty flimsy.  I've seen other folks complain about Athearn loco handrails, too.

Athearn has another loco coming out soon (a GP40-2) that I'd like to have, but I'm sure it will have the same handrail issues.

Has anyone out there replaced the handrails on Athearn locos?  If so, with what did you replace them, and how did it work out?

Thanks!

HO Scale Kato Metra Cars Wanted

I have been searching high and low to find some Metra for my school layout. For those of you following the posts you know we have an engine (and if not now you do). If there is anyone here who can or knows someone who can help please let me know. Oh and if anyone has an unused airbrush that would also be helpful.

Thanks for all your help which I know I find here,

Sunday, Day 1, Daylight Express 2015 NMRA National Convention.

Welcome to my blog of the 2015 NMRA National Convention, the "Portland Daylight Express"

Sunday is actually Day 2 for me, as I am the Clinic AV volunteer for the convention, and we spent yesterday setting up computers and projectors for the clinics. The Pacific Northwest Region graciously gave us a budget to buy new computers, so we have six nice lightweight HP "Stream Notebooks" - admittedly not powerhouses, but capable of running PowerPoint and Adobe Reader, which is all they should be used for.

Building simple circuits

One of the joys of model railroading is it provides the opportunity and motivation to learn new skills. One skill many avoid though, is building electronic circuits. I admit circuit building is intimidating, and not terribly necessary since so much is available RTR, but it is particularly satisfying to turn on the power and see things light up (most DIY circuits involve lights) knowing you put that part together from scratch.

The National Convention and going crazy (or too busy to think)

Its now two days until the start of the National NMRA Convention in Portland. How does that poem go???

'Twas two nights before the convention and all through the house, not a creature was stirring...  they were down in the basement cleaning the layout room and working on the clinics for the convention.

Mine carts and Western theme

Im doing a mine and western theme around my house. I was told to document it here as I go. Not everything is scale or authentic, but its more yard art than anything. I am making an Outhouse, mine front, mine cart, other assorted carts and things to go along with the theme. I have been looking on Craigslist under the "free" section to find the old wood, fence pieces, rusted metal, etc. Trying to do this all on a budget. It may not be model stuff, but i hope you enjoy what Im doing. Will post pictures as I go. Open to comments and suddestions too. Thanks..
