EMD E3 vs E5 vs E6

As a modeler, what’s the difference between an EMD E3A, E5A, and E6A?

I want an E3A and E6A (N scale) but the only thing I can find is the Kato E5. I have decals for both the ACL Campion E3 and IC City of Miami E6, but neither appeared to use the E5. I’ve read the primary difference was electrical but the Kato E5 appears slightly different.

Request Help Identifying This Tender Shell

I would appreciate assistance identifying this tender.  As you can see from the ruler, it is about 50' long.

It belonged to a C&O fan, but looks more like a Union Pacific or Southern Pacific model.

Any help will be appreciated.

Thanks.

Salt Hauling & Modeling

Hi all, I'm hoping to get some general prototype information from those of you that know more about railroads and how they hauled salt. I've lived virtually my whole life in North Carolina, where it snows very little except in the highest of mountain elevations. I am interested in learning more about how the railroads hauled salt for use in spreading on roadways. I am planning for a future HO Scale, 2' x 20' northeastern U.S.

MOW Question?

This morning I came upon a whole string of the cars below on a storage siding in Cedar Rapids, IA. The cars look a lot like well cars but have bottoms so they are more like gondolas. The are marked as MOW Equipment and appear to be brand new.

Anyone have an idea what there intended use is?

Poling pockets

Got to wondering. Why do they still have poling pockets? When did railroads stop using a pole to push a car? It must have been Big Bad John to be able to push more than one car? And back when they used a loco and poling car, the danger to humans was pretty high. So obviously, it's a good thing they don't do that anymore. ?? Or do they? Is there any reason why they still have poling pockets on cars?

C&O manual turnout throws: Proto manuf and HO sources?

Dear MRHers,

Quick questions, as my Google-fu is failing me right now...

1- What Manual ground throw was the C&Os weapon-of-choice circa 1950s?
(Greenbrier sub, if that helps)

2- Are we talking high-level lanterns and direction indicators, or just low-level "flip over" handles?

3- Any known/preferred HO sources or options?

From some searching, Century Foundry and Details-West has come up empty,

I'm loathe to buy complete CI throws just for the lanterns and direction-indicators,
(the model turnouts are already Tortoise-powered, this is a visual-only addition),

Prototype photos for small ore/minerals loading facility - 1950s era

I'm trying to build a prototype-freelance model of a small ore loading facility for early 1950s era Southern Pacific branch-line layout and need prototype photos and info so I can come up with a reasonably plausible design. I wonder if anyone can give me any leads.
