Yard Critique

Hey everyone, I am struggling on the design of my yard.... look this over and give me some suggestions. It is loosely based on Juniata / Conrail. Needs to handle 10ft trains, have engine service buildings, fuel and sand facilities and classify trains.

Does it work better with the mainline in the front or rear?

Thank you, sorry about the poor drawing but Autocad didn't create a PDF very well...

Taking Photos of a Tank Farm

Has anyone experienced harassment from the law or otherwise while taking photos of a tank farm? There's one near my house that I would like to use as a source for ideas for my N scale layout. However, after reading a bit about people being arrested for taking photos, I decided it's best to ask here first.

In case anyone is interested the tank farm is at latitude 33°54'39.38"N, longitude 84°16'25.30"W in Doraville, GA.

Built date

Does anyone know the built date for this CN loco and is the paint sceme appropriate for 1974?

And what is that little green circle with the white mark in it on the front of the hood just above the N in the CN?

Video "Steam in the Snow" event at Conway Scenic Railroad

I spent All Day Saturday following ex Canadian National Locomotive #7470 for a special "Steam in the Snow" event. We had a great Day Photographing and Video recording the Event. Temps were 9 to 19 degrees. The Snow was fresh. This has been an annual event for the last 7 or 8 years. This will be the last one for some time as #7470 is going to be torn down for a Boiler Inspection. So I don't know when She will return to the Rails. Here's the video link.. Enjoy

Backwards brake valves?

I'm sitting here watching Polar Express again (my favorite Christmas movie), and the same scene is bothering me as does every year.  When they show the kids applying the brake on the locomotive, they pull the handle all the way around to the left.  Every brake valve I have ever seen works the other way, with the extreme left being the release position, and the extreme right being the emergency application.  Are there brake valves which work the other way around?  Or is this just another case of "close enough for the general public?"

Shipping rail

I got this nice little drawing from my father-in-law in the mail the other day.

Many years ago he worked at Algoma Steel and this is his sketch on how they loaded rail.

I hope sharing this is of some interest for those who model flat loads.

cool prototype shot

No real place for railfanning in the forums so I though I would share this winter pic I took of some UP cars headed to the Ford plant in Louisville

Small Unique Industry

While researching for industries to incorporate in my layout I came across this operation that was unique to Ontario, Quebec, New Brunswick and Nova Scotia. (I don't know about any other areas of Canada). Shipping Christmas trees.
