Part #2, Railroad Maintenance of Way

Railroad Maintenance of Way

To All: Sperry Rail Service is hired by railroads to test the rail for micro cracks, broken rail and other problems. This service is used to prevent derailments and other concerns for the railroad. Use of a self-propelled Sperry Rail car on your Pike adds interest to your operations. Models of this car have been produced in model form. Photo by Elvin Howland. Yours, Elvin Howland/E. Part #1, Railroad Maintenance of Way

Railroad Maintenance of Way

To All: Today I start a new series called Railroad Maintenance of Way. Pictured is a Burro crane used by many railroads for light duty line side work. They have enough power to pull a gondola that may contain new ties or other supplies. I captured this example of a the CSX (B&O) Burro Crane. Powered models of these have been produced. Wye or regular turnout?

This is the former SP&S. Is this a wye or a regular turnout?

It looks like it was former double track, with a connection made to the remaining track and then a jog around a moved signal. Just guessing on all this.

Thanks.

PRR signal practices?

I'd like to add some signals to a segment of my TT layout and need some input from those who know how the Pennsy would have typically signaled the location in the mid 1950's era.   My freelance plan has a mainline running thru the layout with a passing siding,a spur, and a turnout to the branchline.  I'd like to install signals on the mainline and make the branchline dark territory.  The adjacent turnouts to the branchline and the passing siding are about 2 car lengths apart if that matters.

Piggyback Flatcar question

I'm looking for information about the 53' GSC Piggyback cars used back in the 1950/1960 eras. I have two of the Walthers Mainline HO models that differ from TOFC cars I previously purchased. My question is basically how they loaded the semi trailers onto these cars. The other TOFC cars I have could be loaded from the ends using platforms, but the GSC version has only a single loading step on each end. Also, the "B" end of the car has a brake post that would seem to be in the way for loading from a platform.

Build Dates?

I am cataloging my Rolling Stock in an excel spread sheet. Part of this is making notes on cars that need mods or weathering, etc.

One item I am making notes of is the dates on the cars (if any) as I want to redecal cars dates to match my era better.

One of the cars I just entered is an Atlas Bulkhead Pulpwood car. The dates on this car confuse me! It has BLT 8-63 and in 2 other locations it has HAG 8-62 and PPD 8-62. I assume HAG is Hagerstown MD and PPG is Packed as in truck bearings.
